Jets news:
Winnipeg Free Press: The time Bobby Hull tried to get Wayne Gretzky to play for the Jets. (Paywall). Missed this one earlier by Randy Turner who knows how to spin a good yarn.
Today’s Slapshot: Bob McKenzie – I don’t get sense Trouba on verge of being traded. Transcription of the chat TSN hockey insider Bob McKenzie had today on TSN 1050 (link to that chat is below).
Winnipeg Sun: Matthews set for showdown. We here in Winnipeg have been focused on this rivalry from Patrik Laine’s perspective but Ken went to the other side of the MTS Centre to get some insight from the Leafs first overall selection this past June in Buffalo.
Metro News: Heritage Classic offers chance to connect Winnipeg Jets to its past. Hustler on how the Jets made the right decision establishing a new identity upon their arrival from Atlanta, but writes that now is the time to revisit the original Jets history.
Winnipeg Free Press: Laine vs. Matthews? No, it’s Jets vs. Leafs, both say. (Paywall). Both young players are saying the right things which is to be expected. Regardless of their positions however, the rivalry will provide plenty of fodder for print and audio.
Winnipeg Sun: A budding rivalry. The players can (and will) discount the rivalry talk but media and fans will continue to discuss the two players who will be linked for as long as both play in the NHL. Crosby and Ovechkin are from different years as were Gretzky and Lemieux and while this hasn’t hit that level yet it feels different simply because its a 1 vs 2 in same year as opposed to two #1 overall picks facing off. More along the lines of McDavid vs. Eichel or even Hall vs. Seguin.
Winnipeg Sun: Patrik Laine’s mom helping him adjust to life in Canada and the NHL. Always nice to have some familiarity from home when you make a move of this magnitude. Just reinforces and exemplifies the sacrifices parents make for their kids.
Sportsnet: ‘Lots of work’ on resolving Trouba dilemma. This is the never ending story (until December 1st that is) and the Jets GM was, once again, fielding questions about the disgruntled defenceman.
TSN: Matthews, Laine destined to be forever compared. No question about it. When two prospects get this much hype and both play in major hockey markets I don’t ever really see it dying down.
CBC: Teemu Selanne shares love for Winnipeg and its hockey fans. I always laugh when people who weren’t around in those days or who aren’t from Winnipeg suggest that he was only here for a brief period of time. It doesn’t matter. He captured our city in his rookie season.
Illegal Curve: Jets vs. Leafs projected lineups. Take a look at what the lines looked like after skate today and what combos you should expect to see at MTS Centre this evening. Audio: Patrik Laine, Joel Armia, Blake Wheeler and Nikolaj Ehlers.
Illegal Curve: Morning Papers. If you missed any of the news we have you covered.

Illegal Curve: Coach Maurice pre-game scrum. Main differences between coaching young players vs. a veteran roster. Is getting a power play righted an exact science? How much do guys like Ehlers/Connor benefit from the Laine spotlight? How much can the team’s slow start be attributed to his (and some players) absence at World Cup of Hockey? Evaluating goalie performance? How much importance is there in learning the game away from the rink? The Bruins game being a “building block”. How does he envision Shawn Matthias role on this team? Because the players ease through the early years of hockey, does the adjustment to the NHL change the pressure these top picks are under? Scheifele talks about seeing the pressure that Laine is under and how he is impressed by how he has handled it.
Sportsnet: Hockey Central @ Noon. Jets’ GM Kevin Cheveldayoff guests on Hockey Central @ Noon to discuss hosting the NHL Heritage Classic this Sunday, Patrik Laine through his first three games in the NHL, and the situation with Jacob Trouba.
