Who will lead Team Canada in 2010?

Gretzky, Kevin Lowe and Steve Tambellini were the key front-office elements of the last two Olympic teams. Lowe and Tambellini now work together in the Edmonton Oilers’ hockey operations department; and would certainly be a part of the mix if Gretzky took the top job.

If not Gretzky, and that current/former Oilers’ axis, then the other primary alternative is an executive team revolving around the Detroit Red Wings’ front office, beginning with the dynamic managerial duo of Ken Holland and Steve Yzerman. Bob Gainey, the Montreal Canadiens’ reputable general manager, would also be involved.

Hockey Canada has drawn heavily on the Red Wings’ organization these past six years for help assembling its annual world championship team. In that span, Holland, his assistant Jim Nill, and Yzerman have all taken turns at the helm, coinciding with a time when Canada’s world championship results have improved dramatically over the previous two decades.
