The Vancouver Canucks added some depth down the middle for next season, claiming soon-to-be restricted free agent centre Kyle Wellwood off waivers from the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Canucks can retain his rights by giving him a qualifying offer and he would not become a free agent.

This is a good move by a team that is short on scoring. Wellwood didn’t cost them anything in terms of players/draft picks and he has some upside. I assume the Canucks will qualify the diminutive forward and retain his rights. He could be a nice addition to their second power play unit.
