From Rich Chere of the Newark Star-Ledger:

Devils GM Lou Lamoriello said this afternoon that he placed Vitaly Vishnevski on waivers as a favor to the player, but it was clear the Russian-born defenseman did not live up to expectations after signing a three-year, $5.4 million deal as a free agent last summer.

Vishnevski, 28, cleared waivers yesterday and will return to play in Russia.

“He’s a great kid. He was great in every aspect,” Lamoriello said. “He communicated to us he wanted to go to Russia for personal reasons, so we put him on waivers for him to do that. It was all above-board. We pit him on waivers so everyone would have a shot at him, but I’m sure everyone knew what his situation was.”

Vishnevski will now head back to Russia and sign with a KHL team.
