By signing Stephane Yelle to a one-year, $750,000 contract (this season’s version of Glen Metropolit) yesterday, GM Peter Chiarelli added some characteristics that are always in demand: penalty-killing, faceoff success, experience, and veteran leadership.
But Chiarelli also expanded his options by bringing in the center/left wing.
First, let’s assume that Yelle makes the club out of training camp and fills the expected roles: fourth-line center/wing, penalty killer on the first or second set of forwards, faceoff specialist. If so, how does that impact the rest of the roster? Let’s go down the line.

As of now, I’d bet that Yelle lines up on the team’s fourth line–most likely at center. However, he isn’t this year’s Glen Metropolit because he doesn’t have Metropolit’s hands or offensive ability.
He's closing in on his first game since January 13th.
