This is a shocking, shocking development.
Varlamov, a 20-year-old Russian, was the first goalie out on the ice for warm-ups, leading many in the press box to speculate that he is the starting goalie over Jose Theodore. Usually the goalie who comes out first is the starter.

This move was suspected for sometime, but it actually happened today and no matter the speculation it is a bit surprising. That said, I believe this is the right move by Boudreau. The Capitals don’t have confidence in Theodore and it was adversely affecting their play.
