Winnipeg Jets trade Logan Stanley and Luke Schenn to the Buffalo Sabres

We learned that the Jets would be sitting Logan Stanley and Luke Schenn ahead of their final game before the NHL Trade Deadline when they took on the Lightning for roster management reasons.

With that news the next time we expected to hear about this duo was when they got moved ahead of the 2 PM CST deadline on Friday but not in this manner with both being dealt in the same trade but that’s just what happened as they have been sent to the Sabres as per Chad DeDominicis who is Host of Expected Buffalo Podcast and later confirmed by insider Frank Seravalli although we didn’t know what the return was going to be.

Murat Ates of The Athletic Winnipeg says the return is:

“Hearing the #NHLJets trade of Logan Stanley + Luke Schenn to Buffalo is for 22 year old forward Isak Rosén, 28 year old pending UFA LD Jacob Bryson, and a second-round pick.”

Darren Dreger added this detail:

“2027 2nd round pick. Jets also get a 4th in 26 that is the better of Buffalo or Edmontons. Winnipeg retains 50% on Luke Schenn salary.”

Rosen was the 14th overall pick back in 2021. He has 43 points (25G 18A) for the Americans of the AHL this season in 37 games and has 7 points (3G 4A) in 16 games for the Sabres in the NHL. His addition will certainly be a boost to the Moose as those numbers with Rochester would make him the leading goal scorer and points.

Bryson is a 2017 4th rounder who has 289 NHL games under his belt including 35 this season with Buffalo.

Logan Stanley:

Almost ten years ago the focus of Winnipeg was who might the Jets select with the 2nd overall pick but they also had another selection late (22nd) in the 1st round. They wouldn’t make that pick as they packaged it along with the 36th overall selection to the Flyers for the 18th and 79th picks.

Of course they used that option at the draft in Buffalo to select 6’7″ Logan Stanley out of Windsor of the OHL.

It has been a long and very winding road for the big man who was hard-pressed to get into the lineup for parts of his career but has become a staple of the Jets blueline this season playing all games except one (and that was due to a suspension).

In his previous five NHL seasons he scored a goal in every one. It didn’t matter if he played in 19 games or 63. But this year he has already scored nine times for Winnipeg which puts him sixth on his team for goals (and second among defenceman behind Josh Morrissey). Worth noting his shooting percentage is 10% higher this season than last (12% vs 2%).

There was some speculation that he might sign back in Winnipeg now that he appears to finally be hitting his stride but as a UFA at the end of this season his next contract has likely priced him out of Manitoba.

Luke Schenn:

This move doesn’t come as much of a surprise as there has been talk this season that he was unhappy with his usage and wanted to be moved to a contender where he could challenge for a Cup and also have a bigger role.

His acquisition by Winnipeg is going to be remembered as a bad move as he cost them a 2nd in 2026 and 4th in 2027. With the current positioning of the Jets that 2nd rounder could be a very high pick.
