RDS reports Montreal Canadiens trade Steve Begin to Dallas Stars.

RDS reports Montreal Canadiens trade F Steve Begin to Dallas Stars.

Analysis to follow but suffice it to say this is a trade of minimal importance.

Update: Coming back to La Belle Province from the Lone Star State is defenceman Doug Janik. And you thought I was kidding when I said this is a trade of minimal importance.

Trade Analysis:

As just stated, this trade isn’t very significant.  With Dallas losing Toby Petersen for a month, combined with Brad Richards and Brenden Morrow being injured, the Stars needed some extra depth up front and Begin will provide them with a rugged fourth line forward who is a good character guy in the room.  In addition, he can log quality penalty killing minutes.

In Janik, the Habs get a depth defenseman.  He’s 28 and hasn’t made much of a dent in the NHL.  He’s a seventh defenseman on a team that needs one.  This move serves both sides well, although I like Begin better than I do Janik.
