Spencer Machacek (Hat Tip, Hockey’s Future) is an Atlanta Thrashers draft pick (3rd round, 2007) who is currently the captain of the Vancouver Giants of the WHL. A 6’0, 182 pound winger, Machacek has developed into a scoring threat for this year’s edition of the Giants.
A hard working, two way type player, Machacek has developed a mean streak and has admirably filled the void left by the departure of former captain Milan Lucic. He fought Alternate Captain Jonathan Blum in practice and has seen his play improve ever since.Scoring at a point per game clip, he has developed some outstanding chemistry with linemates Mario Bliznak and Michael Repik on the top line. Able to play any forward position, this versatile forward has been running the power play from the half wall this year after spending the previous season parked in front of the net.
Machacek participated in the ADT Canada-Russia Challenge but didn’t get an invite to the World Junior camp. Atlanta GM Don Waddell is quoted as saying that in addition to Machacek’s solid two way game, they like that fact that he is a winner.Giants coach Don Hay feels that Spencer’s best skill is his work ethic. Though he has no glaring weakness, it should be noted that Machacek is one of the oldest players in his draft class, so his numbers may be a little skewed.
