From the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:

The Penguins’ efforts to flesh out their roster have stretched to the far side of the Atlantic.

They are trying to sign free-agent left winger Janne Pesonen, a 26-year-old Finn.

He has been offered a contract, and the Penguins hope to learn later today or tomorrow whether he will accept it. Pesonen is believed to be considering offers from teams in Russia and Switzerland, as well.

I don’t know anything about Personen but going overseas to find hidden gems has been a staple of the Red Wings for years. Maybe the Penguins are copying that model.
