On the Beat: Paging Marian Hossa…

What team beat writers are saying this afternoon:

Stanley Cup Final

  • The Wings should be scared because the Penguins believe in themselves, writes Curtis Zupke of the OC Register.  History says Detroit will win and so do the statistics, but it is one game, so obviously anything can happen.  I’ll say it again; doesn’t Sidney Crosby have to breakout at some point?
  • Marian Hossa has been really bad in the Final.  Ray Ferraro tore him apart on TSN Sportscentre last night.

Everyone Else

  • Could the cost of relocating the Coyotes be about $150 million on top of the purchase price?  Balsillie is rich, very rich, so I wouldn’t be shocked if he paid that–all other issues aside, of course.
  • Michael Russo believes the Wild coaching position will be given to either Paul McLean, Peter Laviolette or Todd Richards.  All very qualified candidates who believe in a more aggressive style of play than Wild fans are used to.
  • Offers to purchase the Montreal Canadiens are apparently due todaySo, while there have been rumors that Gillett may not sell, those seem to have been false.
  • Tom Gullitti looks at the candidates to replace Brent Sutter.  I love how Larry Robinson’s name is on there again!  He has been a coach with the Devils like 14 times.
  • Ottawa fans won’t be forgiving Dany Heatley, writes James Gordon.  To me, it depends on the return.  They may not even hold much of a grudge if the team can get good value for Heatley.
  • Decision time in Vancouver is high in risk and rewardThere are a lot of avenues for the Canucks to venture down, so it will be extremely fascinating to see which direction Gillis leads them.  The Sedins are the safe avenue, free agency is a risky one.
  • Don’t say goodbye to Sergei Fedorov just yet Capitals fans.  I really don’t think the Capitals will miss Fedorov that much, but it only costs them money to keep him.
