The Winnipeg Jets are in need of a new head coach and it appears Christmas may have come early for the organization with the news today that the New York Islanders relieved Barry Trotz of his duties as Head Coach. As per CapFriendly Trotz had one year remaining on his contract at around $4,000,000.
He is a two time Jack Adams winner for best coach in the NHL (2015-16 & 2018-19) and has a Stanley Cup under his belt from his time in Washington in 2017-18.
Trotz is from Dauphin, Manitoba so the provincial familiarity is a factor but more importantly he is seen as a solid head coach who can get teams to play a defensively responsible system and still win hockey games.
He will no doubt garner interest from teams other than Winnipeg so it will be interesting to see how this all plays out.
