NHL Morning Papers (Wednesday Edition): Mike Gillis gets more power in Vancouver, Paul Kariya’s road back and who will own the Coyotes?

  • While Patrick Eaves signed with Detroit on Tuesday, here are the buyout amounts he is owed by the Boston Bruins for the next few years.
  • The Reading Royals have become the Bruins’ ECHL affiliate.
  • In an expected move, the Dallas Stars have hired Charlie Huddy to become an assistant coach in charge of running the team’s defense.  (Writer’s note: This is a terrific hire, as Huddy did a great job with young defensemen in Edmonton and can now work with the young Stars defense.)
  • Staying in Dallas, Mike Heika has decided to profile new Stars netminder Alex Auld today.
  • George Sipple of the Detroit Free Press wonder if newly signed Patrick Eaves can become another Daniel Cleary?
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal tells us that CBC has some interest in Craig MacTavish moving behind the microphone next season.
  • Give the Panthers organization credit for lowering certain ticket prices and planning to have certain players interact with fans throughout the season.
  • Brendan Shanahan has decided to return to the Devils for another season.
  • Two weeks from now, Dany Heatley will be speaking to kids about youth hockey in Toronto.  (Writer’s note: It is a workshop on how not to demand a trade…)
  • The Senators have re-signed Brian Elliot to a two-year contract.
  • Dan Bickley of the Arizona Republic has a very interesting article on the whole Coyotes ownership fiasco.
  • Staying with the Coyotes controversy, is Jerry Moyes going to be held in contempt of court?
  • Meanwhile, Paul Hunter tells us what Judge Baum will most likely decide today.
  • Stephen Brunt wonders if the NHL will be operating the Coyotes soon enough?
  • Penguins forward Janne Pesonen has decided to play in Russia next season.
  • After twenty seasons in the NHL, Jeremy Roenick will announce his retirement tomorrow, writes David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News.
  • Jeremy Roenick was a positive influence during his two seasons in San Jose, writes Greg Beachem.
  • After missing most of last season, Paul Kariya is training hard to have a bounce back season for the Blues.
  • Mike Smith, who has had his concussion issues recently, was playing net against a bunch of kids and one of them hit him in the head but he is okay.
  • I don’t plan on any other player moves at this point,” said Brian Burke.  Well, that lasted long!  As, Burke says he is looking to move Justin Pogge if the right deal comes along.
  • Mike Gillis have been named the new President of the Vancouver Canucks, reports Jason Botchford.
  • This much is clear; the Canucks owner loves Mike Gillis, writes Cam Cole.
