• Damien Cox of the Toronto Star cannot believe how many off-ice issues are the center of attention these days for the NHL, and it’s not a good thing, says Cox.
• “I don’t know if I fully appreciated when I took the job, some of the challenges that would be faced just by that structure, ” said former NHLPA boss Paul Kelly.

• As David linked in hockey hits, Andrew Ference has commented, somewhat, on the NHLPA’s decision to fire Paul Kelly.

• Carolina GM Jim Rutherford is pretty confident in the team he has put together for the upcoming season.

• Joel Ward impressed the Predators brass last season with his two-way play, so that is why the team wants to being the 2009/10 season with Ward anchoring the team’s third line.
• In interesting news, Brendan Shanahan is considering switching to a visor.
• Jamie Langenbrunner wasn’t sure what to expect, but he says he’s happy that Jacques Lemaire has decided to maintain the team’s current captaincy situation.
• Donald Brashear was booed at a Rangers fans meet-and-greet on Wednesday, writes Michael Obernauer.
• In actual hockey news out of Phoenix, the team has signed Taylor Pyatt to a one-year deal.
• Len Barrie is getting raked over the coals for some actions money movement involving the Bear Mountain Resort in British Columbia.
• In news that may very well be related to the story above, Oren Koules is apparently closing in on taking control of the Lightning.
• The Canucks don’t want to fool themselves, so they do not expect a full 82-game season from Sami Salo.
• After finalizing Roberto Luongo’s new contract, it is fair to say that Mike Gillis has had a busy summer in B.C.
• Apparently Luongo’s new deal does not include a no-movement clause.

• The NHL stated yesterday that if the league bought the team and then sold it for a profit, all the profit would go to the creditors.

• Jim Balsillie has agreed to start the season in Phoenix should he be granted the team, however, he’d want to move the team mid-season to Hamilton.
