Here are the morning papers for Saturday the 23rd of August:

  • Red Wings defenseman Chris Chelios brought the Stanley Cup to Wrigley Field yesterday.  Chelios won’t stop there, as he plans to take the Cup to Comisky Park and to see Eddie Veder over the weekend.
  • The Hurricanes bought out David Tanabe at the end of last season, but that situation is far from over, writes Chip Alexander of the News & Observer.
  • The Blue Jackets have agreed to a working relationship with Johnstown of the ECHL.
  • Benoit Groulx has been named coach of the Panthers’ AHL affiliate in Rochester next season.
  • The Tennessean newspaper is fighting for William Del Biaggio’s bankruptcy proceedings to be open to the public, writes Brad Schrade.
  • The Devils have waived Vitali Vishnevski and the Russian defenseman is expected to return home to play in the KHL, writes Mark Everson of the NY Post.
  • The Coyotes are hoping to see a big year out of young defenseman Keith Yandle this season. (Writer’s note: I’ve seen Yandle play on a couple of occassions and he could definitely stand to gain some muscle.  That said, he is a good skater, with good puck awareness and if he shores up the defensive side of his game, he should fit in well on the Coyotes’ back-end.)
  • Former Coyotes forward Tyson Nash is going to try out for the Lightning this September, writes Jim Gintonio of the Arizona Republic.
  • As Damian Cristodero tells us, there is nothing not to love about the way Steve Stamkos plays the game.  In other news concerning the Bolts, Ron Campbell has left his job as team president and become a senior advisor to the Lightning’s new ownership group.

For Illegal Curve, I’m Richard Pollock.
