Here are the morning papers for Friday the 30th of January:
- There will be no Peter Forsberg in the NHL this season.
- J.S. Giguere is not happy that he’s not the main starter in Anaheim, but he respects Randy Carlyle’s decision.
- After watching the Thrashers fall to the Islanders last night, he thinks the team needs both John Tavares and Victor Hedman. In encouraging news, the big Boris Valabik has come into his own on Atlanta’s back-end.
- The Bruins lost to the ever resilient Devils on Thursday, writes Kevin Paul Dupont. Last night was like a post-season tilt. Phil Kessel sure had a succesful return from mono.
- Tim Connolly and Drew Stafford are demonstrating some great chemistry for the Sabres.
- Mike Cammalleri will be offered more money elsewhere, but the Flames still have hopes of re-signing him. If the Flames are leading heading into the third, you are through.
- The Hurricanes played with some desperation yesterday and it resulted in a 3-2 victory over the division-rival Lightning.
- The Blackhawks went back to struggling last night after defeating Anaheim on Wednesday.
- Avalanche forward Cody McCormick and Maple Leafs defenseman Jeff Finger are very close friends. The results may have been different last night for the Avalanche, had the referees not called a questionable goaltender interference call on Ryan Smyth. Andrew Raycroft wasn’t very sharp.
- Jason Williams has shown some great perseverance to end up with the NHL career that he has. With Ottawa coming into town, Mike Commodore explains his poor relationship with Ottawa GM Bryan Murray. Here are the Jackets’ projected lines for tonight’s game.
- Dave Tippett thinks his Stars team is finally turning the corner. Chris Chelios made Krys Barch’s smile a whole lot uglier last night.
- One of the reasons Detroit lost is that they gave up three power play goals to Dallas yesterday. The Wings’ first period wasn’t any good either. On the injury front, Brad Stuart is expected to miss at least ten games.
- The Oilers have to ensure they play a controlled game versus the Wild tonight. That said, Edmonton has to have a rebound game after the team’s horrible Tuesday performance. Tom Gilbert at forward on the power play?
- With their great play as of late, coach Pete DeBoer thinks the Panthers should be buyers and not sellers at the deadline. The hot Panthers dominated the struggling Habs on Thursday.
- The Kings defeated the Blackhawks last night at the Staples Center.
- Michael Russo provides insight on the Erik Reitz for Dan Fritsche trade that Minnesota just pulled off with the Rangers. Wild GM Doug Risebrough sees Fritsche fitting in on the third or fourth line.
- Pat Hickey says Carey Price needs to be a lot better for the Habs. Don’t expect the Habs to trade for Jay Bouwmeester.
- To a team that couldn’t get on the scoreboard, Steve Sullivan’s return to the Nashville lineup has been more than a pleasant surprise.
- Brendan Shanahan thinks you can teach offense. Jamie Langenbrunner brought his “A” game for New Jersey in Boston last night.
- The Islanders ended their 14-game road losing streak last night in Atlanta.
- Chris Drury will be receiving quite the College Hockey honor this weekend. Larry Brooks thinks the Rangers’ trade for Erik Reitz will provide leverage but that’s only if the Rangers actually use it.
- Peter Rigin sure picked the right time to score his first NHL goal.
- With Mike Richards, Simon Gagne and Jeff Carter looking to break out of slumps, the Lightning may be the perfect solution for the Flyers tonight.
- The Coyotes are trying to be the Arizona Cardinals of the NHL.
- The Penguins need Miroslav Satan to pick up his game. Kris Letang has been playing well for the Penguins.
- Evgeni Nabokov is just unbeatable right now for the Sharks, as he picked up his second consecutive shutout on Thursday. The Sharks had to be cautious last night, as the Coyotes have defeated each of the top teams in the Western Conference this season.
- In what has become the trend all season long, the Blues played poorly at the end of the third period and lost last night to Ottawa. The Blues are certainly desperate.
- Who is going to be Tampa Bay’s backup netminder? Forget the backups, Mike Smith put the blame for last night’s loss on his shoulders.
- Nikolai Antropov finally scored and old Leafs netminder Andrew Raycroft wasn’t sharp, as Toronto defeated Colorado 7-4 at the Pepsi Center. Doug Gilmour will be honored by the Maple Leafs organization tomorrow. Apparently the trade market is heating up, says Brian Burke.
- A couple of the Canucks went at it during practice on Thursday. These days it isn’t exactly enjoyable to be a Canuck. Here is what Canucks fans think should be done to change the fortunes of this team.
- The Capitals play shinny too.
