The Moose and Wolves, who are bitter AHL rivals, will become even more familiar with each other over the next few weeks with the teams facing off against each other five (including tonight) of the next seven games for Manitoba.
Lineup news:
With the addition of Nikita Chibrikov, Brad Lambert and Parker Ford from the Jets the Moose basically swapped that line in and took out the fourth line of Tyson Empey and Kevin Conley. Reece Vitelli who played on the win in the last game was assigned to the ECHL. Chase Yoder was a healthy scratch as well. Jets prospect Fabian Wagner is day-to-day with an injury.
Moose lineup:
Di Giuseppe – Yager – Fagemo
Barlow – Zhilkin – JAD
Chibrikov – Ford – Lambert
Shaw – Gustafsson – Duehr
Heinola – Clague
Phillips – Salomonsson
Sautner – Anhorn
Milic
Notable:
Didn’t take long for the home team to take a lead. Isaak Phillips scored one I don’t think anyone was expecting to go in as he used the screen in front and a quick snaps shot to make it a 1-0 game. Chibrikov and Ford with assists in their first AHL game of the season in their first game of the season.
Good start to the opening period saw Manitoba take a 5-1 shot edge despite having to kill a penalty. They actually went on a 10-0 run.
An unfortunate bounce for the home team gives the Wolves a tap in to tie the game.
Today his coach called him a 1st line centre in the AHL and Jets prospect Danny Zhilkin (2022 3rd) goes roof daddy with his fifth goal of the season. Great pass by fellow prospect Colby Barlow (2023 1st) who snuck a peek before firing it over. He was also lauded by head coach Mark Morrison.
Ville Heinola activated off this pass by Brayden Yager for a breakaway chance. Moose came out on fire to start the 2nd (same way they did in 1st) scoring once and holding a 7-1 shot edge (although this chance doesn’t count as one of them).
Lots of excitement during 4 on 4 hockey as Jets goalie prospect Thomas Milic keeps his team up by one making this sequence of stops.
And then at the other Brayden Yager with a wicked backhand pass to set up this chance for Samuel Fagemo.
Things were sitting pretty for the home side after 40 minutes as they held a 2-1 lead and a 23-16 shot edge.
But out came the Wolves to start the 3rd period as they held a 10-0 shot edge just past the midpoint of the final frame but Milic was excellent in the crease. After Manitoba had a 18-5 shot lead it went Chicago’s way to the tune of 21-5.
It would end up a 24-5 run including the visitors going 13-0 in the shot count in the 3rd period which was the first time in the 30 year history of the organization a Moose 1.0, IceCaps or Moose 2.0 team hasn’t recorded a shot at home in a period.
Despite that ignominious distinction Manitoba won the game 2-1 to improve to 8-6-2 which vaults them into a tie for 2nd spot in the Central.
