From Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen:

There’s no shortage of comparisons for Meszaros and his agent, Ritch Winter, to throw at Murray.

Calgary’s Dion Phaneuf, a Norris Trophy finalist, cashed in with a six-year, $39-million extension, but he’s in a class by himself.

Yet even those who aren’t considered franchise defencemen have struck it rich. Brent Seabrook of the Chicago Blackhawks signed a three-year, $10.5-million deal, Matt Carle of the San Jose Sharks will begin a four-year, $13.75-million contract next year and Fedor Tyutin of the New York Rangers commanded a four-year, $11.375-million extension. On Monday, Nashville’s Ryan Suter signed a four-year, $14-million extension.

Meszaros is certainly in the class of the defensemen listed above and that could present cap issues for the Senators. That being said, if the Senators trade Meszaros then they will need to replace his puck-moving skills on the back-end. Add to that the impending departure of Wade Redden, and the team can probably not afford to trade Meszaros.
