From TSN:

Boston University free agent defenceman Matt Gilroy has signed a two-year deal worth $3.5 million with the New York Rangers.

It is a one-way contract however, he is not eligible to play for the Rangers in this year’s playoffs. He will be eligible for free agency in three years.

Last week, Gilroy was named the winner of the Hobey Baker Award as the best U.S. college hockey player.

Sorry Leafs fans.   You won’t be getting the most coveted college free agent defenseman on the market.  Gilroy is supposed to be that good considering 20+ teams were interested in his services.  Never mind the 2 years and $3.5 million he just signed for before ever playing a NHL game.  This move is a good one by the Rangers, as it only cost them money and no other assets.  In addition, they can throw him on the back-end with talented youngsters Marc Staal and Daniel Girardi to develop a nice three-defensemen core to add to Redden and Roszival.
