A long-rumored trade that would send San Jose center Patrick Marleau to the Blue Jackets for a package including right winger Nikolai Zherdev could finally be taking shape.
NHL sources say the Blue Jackets and Sharks do not have an offer in place, and they have not had substantive trade talks. But Marleau has become the Blue Jackets’ No. 1 target for a center to play alongside left winger Rick Nash.
Marleau’s availability hinges on two factors: the Sharks’ ability to re-sign defenseman Brian Campbell, which would force the Sharks to move Marleau for budgetary reasons, and the Blue Jackets’ willingness to move the No. 6 pick.
