The Pittsburgh Penguins are closing in on an extension with Evgeni Malkin that is believed to mirror the extension Pens captain Sidney Crosby signed in July of 2007, a five-year deal averaging $8.7 million.

Mirroring Crosby’s deal is a smart move by the Pens. They don’t need one superstar making more money than another. The fact is, Malkin was never going anywhere. His talent is unquestionable and him, Crosby and Staal are the future of the Penguins for years to come.
