Back on November 29th the Jets suffered a 4-3 loss to the Golden Knights in Vegas but the bigger loss was Nikolaj Ehlers leaving the game in the 2nd period and not returning. Here is the replay of the play which caused the injury:
The next day when the team was in Dallas for an optional ahead of a game against the Stars the dynamic forward wasn’t ruled out of the game being labelled as day-to-day. Of course he would not play in the game against their Central opponent which would be his first game missed this season.
Four days after suffering the injury Ehlers was placed by the team on IR with Jets bench boss Scott Arniel telling us in a media availability on December 3rd that he expects Ehlers to miss 7-10 days.
“We got home and he got to see our doctors. Lower-body. Little bit worse then at first. But we’ll just see. He’ll probably be out a week, week to 10 days but hopefully less than that. We’ll just kinda monitor him everyday.”
The vaunted Jets power play sans their human zone entry machine has fallen off a cliff in the five games he’s missed:
0/2 vs Stars
0/2 vs Blues
1/5 vs Sabres
0/2 vs Hawks
1/4 vs Blue Jackets
Fast forward to last night after the loss to the Blue Jackets which was the fifth game that Ehlers has missed the head coach of Winnipeg was asked for an update and had this to say:
“There could be a chance that he could be skating this week. We’ll see. We don’t practice tomorrow. Good chance he could be out on the ice this week.”
His words don’t convey much certainty. We shall have to wait and see if he’s on the ice (in some capacity) tomorrow morning when the Jets have morning skate as they prepare to face the Bruins on Tuesday night.
The big defenceman blocked a shot and will miss next few games.
