Illegal Curve Radio – June 2, 2010 Recap

For the latest NHL news, check out Illegalcurve on Twitter.

On the eve of Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals, we had our show tonight. If you missed it because you were watching the game, you can view it here.

I was having some small technical difficulties, I missed the first 20 minutes of the show and there was one point in the middle where the audio cut out (unfortunately). The IC podcast will be up later if you are interested.

The show recap:

Here is the outline that was used for the show, keep in mind it is not exactly what occured and the first 20 mins did not show up on UStream.

8:00PM World Hockey Summit

8:20PM Hockey News & Notes

Dominik Hasek signing to play in KHL

Spartak will hold a news conference on Monday to announce the signing of the 45-year-old, who came out of retirement last year to play for Pardubice in his native Czech Republic.

Bill Daly’s comments on Hartford:

Some of the most recent conversations between Baldwin and the NHL have revolved around the Whalers’ logos and trademarks, which Daly said belong to the league.

“Am I optimistic?” Baldwin told The Hartford Courant in March. “I’m always optimistic. I just hope everybody sees the wisdom in what we’re trying to do and all work together.”

Daly said he would not be in attendance for any news briefing in Hartford, in no small part because he plans to be in Philadelphia for Game 3 of the Stanley Cup final.

“I know Howard has an interest in bringing a minor-league team to Hartford,” Daly said. “That’s the extent of my knowledge.”

Scott Melanby hired as assistant coach in St. Lou:

Scott Mellanby has been hired as an assistant coach by the St. Louis Blues, where he spent four seasons during his playing career.

The Blues announced the move Tuesday.

Mellanby, 43, had been working as a pro scout for the Vancouver Canucks. He played 21 seasons in the NHL, including stints in Philadelphia, Edmonton, Florida and Atlanta.

Paul Martin and the Devils:

they’re going to do about negotiating with soon-to-be unrestricted free agents forward Ilya Kovalchuk and defenseman Paul Martin. Paul Martin, however, wants some assurances first.

Meanwhile, Martin told The Post that he and GM Lou Lamoriello agreed to wait until after a new Devils coach is hired to discuss contract. That scenario could be troublesome, considering that Jacques Lemaire was hired last July 13 and other teams could swoop up Martin, who made $4.5 million last season, on July 1.

8:40PM Rapid Fire (General topic of job openings)

1)    In his State of the NHL, Gary Bettman said consideration is underway to change the all star game format—what would you like to see done with the game?

2)    The NHL will hold a rule evaluation camp to test out potential new rules—what rule would you like to see changed/adopted?

3)    Which team do you associate Jeremy Roenick with—Chicago or Philly

4)    Tickets to the NHL entry draft are available to Kings fans simply by printing them from the Kings website—no charge. Tell me again why the Entry Draft is in LA

5)    Why is the NHL the only league that has a  Player Awards ceremony and why does it takes place in Las Vegas in July?

6)    Cory Schneider is allegedly the best goalie not currently playing in the NHL—He just re-signed with Canucks to languish as Roberto Luongo’s backup. If you were an NHL team needing a goalie, what would you offer Vancouver in a trade for Schneider

7)    The Oilers signed 19 year old Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson to an entry level contract. Do you expect to see the former 1st round draft pick (10th overall) play with the Oilers next year and if so, on what line?

8)    Were you as riveted as I was by the draft combine on TSN?

Cheers & Jeers (I’m cheering the story of Ed Snider & the Flyer’s fans from NFLD)
