From Luke Decock of the Charlotte News & Observer:

After two months of convoluted negotiations, the Hurricanes have agreed to terms with Tim Gleason on a four-year contract worth $11.5 million. The restricted free agent defenseman will earn $2 million this season, $2.5 million in 2009-10, $3 million in 2010-11 and $3.5 million in 2011-12.

Read more about Gleason’s new contract here.

Gleason gets a nice payday here. The Hurricanes obviously like his physicality on the back-end and his ability to log a lot of minutes. I’m sure it didn’t hurt Gleason’s negotiation team that he was the centerpiece of the Jack Johnson trade a season ago.

Update: Darcy Hordichuk acquired by the Hurricanes for a 5th round choice in 2009.

Note: Hordichuk is a free agent on July 1, so if the Canes can’t sign him, they get Nashville’s 2010 5th rounder.

Well, I feel like Hordichuk gets traded once a year. In fact, this is the fifth trade of his career. He’s a big-time fighter who should add some toughness to the Canes’ forward corps if they can re-sign him.
