Game 37: Flames 4 Jets 1 post-game recap

The two Western Conference division leaders met in a battle of 1st place teams and ultimately the Flames take it 4-1 which means the Jets fall to 24-11-2 on the season. Heck of a performance from Calgary netmidner David Rittich.

For those who would like to take a deeper dive into the advanced stats here are the results from tonight’s game via Natural Stat Trick.

Game play:

– Neither the Jets nor the Flames were really able to get many grade A scoring chances in the 1st;
– Winnipeg outshot Calgary 14-7 after 20 minutes;
– A weird start to the middle frame as Patrik Laine on a backcheck ended up scoring an own goal;
– Adam Lowry grabbed a Flames turnover late in the 2nd to tie the game;
– But moments later Calgary scored a beauty tic-tac-toe goal to re-take the lead;
– The middle frame saw Jets score twice Calgary score once but the visitors held a 2-1 lead after 40;
– Shots were 13-11 for the Flames in that 2nd period which meant Jets held a 25-20 lead overall;
– Jets had chances to tie it but Flames goalie David Rittich was having none of that in the final frame;
– Mark Jankowski capitalized on a shorthanded 2 on 1 to put the Flames up 3-1;
– Johnny Gaudreau notched the rare visitor hat trick into the empty net to seal the deal 4-1 for the Flames.

Notable/Numbers:

– Adam Lowry scored his sixth goal of the season in his first game back in the lineup.

Coach Maurice:  Assessment of the game.  What did the Lowry line give them?  Did Byfuglien get two slashing calls on the one play?  The shorthanded goal against.  On guarding against the Flames ability to score shorthanded.
