Friday, July 1 (Canada Day) Winnipeg Jets Morning Papers

A Happy Canada day to all our Canadian readers. Winnipeg Sun:  Jets sign more local content with Meech.  To the surprise of nobody, the Jets weren’t big players today.

The Hockey News:  Overpayment candidates.  I don’t expect True North to blow the bank today.

Winnipeg Sun:  Hnidy eager to be a Jet.    Could the Jets use his veteran leadership?  For the right price, absolutely.

Globe and Mail:  Shaw shelves sports project.  That’s too bad for True North as it doesn’t hurt to have another player bidding for the Jets TV rights.

Globe and Mail:  Jagr joins the Flyers.  Have to admit I’m looking forward to seeing Jagr back in the NHL.  Didn’t expect it to be in a Philly jersey but should be an interesting year for the 39 year old.

ESPN:  Don’t expect a big splash from the Bruins.  Ryder was riding all playoffs, so not sure I’d let him go so easily.

Philadelphia Sports Daily:  Buying Flyers have options in free agency.  Oh man, if Jagr went to the hated cross state rival of the Penguins, it would be monumental to watch the Flyers/Penguins first game.

TBO:  Lightning working to sign Stamkos.  Stevie Y has to get this done.

TSN:  Ducks’ Selanne undergoes arthroscopic knee surgery.  Let’s hope this doesn’t adversely impact on his decision to play next season otherwise the Jets games against the Ducks on December 17th isn’t going to be nearly as exciting.

Buffalo News:  Ehrhoff signing sends a message. If the Jets weren’t back, I’d be happy that a small market team like Buffalo was doing well and attracting free agents but business is business, so now everyone is the enemy.

Detroit News:  Jonathan Ericsson signs a 3 year deal with the Wings.  There was a lot of talk that he would take over for Lidstrom (whenever he retires) but he just sometimes seems to lose the puck and will take some more seasoning before he ever gets mentioned in same sentence as Lidstrom.

Arizona Republic:  Coyotes have room to operate as free agency opens.  This situation is an enigma wrapped in a riddle.  Don’t ask me how the 29 other teams are expected to continue to pay to make the Coyotes more successful.
