Former Winnipeg Jets centre Sean Monahan signs five-year deal with Columbus Blue Jackets

When the Jets moved to buy out defenceman Nate Schmidt this morning the expectation was that it was a precursor to another move. The conventional wisdom was it was to make room to sign centre Sean Monahan who they spent a 2024 1st rounder to acquire from the Montreal Canadians.

The centre played 34 games for the Jets finishing with 13 goals and 11 assists for 24 points.

However he is taking his talents to Columbus as per Pierre LeBrun of TSN who is reporting it is a five-year deal worth 5.5 million AAV. That term was likely a deal breaker for the Jets who will now have to try to find a stop gap while they wait for 2022 1st rounder Brad Lambert to take the next step. Darren Dreger of TSN mentioned Adam Henrique who just went to the Cup Finals with the Oilers.
