Former Winnipeg Jets captain Blake Wheeler retires from the NHL

The news hardly comes as a surprise since Blake Wheeler wasn’t playing in the NHL last season but last week on 680 CJOB’s Jets at Noon show he advised the guys that he was done.

“I basically more or less right after last year knew I was all done. I guess I haven’t felt a rush to make a formal announcement or anything. After my injury and kinda the way things ended last year I just didn’t have anything left in the tank for it”.

Quite a career for the big Minnesotan.

During his time in Winnipeg he celebrated his 1000th NHL game. While not all of those games were with Winnipeg he leaves the franchise as the leader in a number of (Jets 2.0) categories including:

874 – games played
540 – assists
795 – points (now held by Mark Scheifele)
11 – shorthanded goals

In total he played 1172 games in the NHL with the Bruins, Thrashers, Jets and Rangers scoring 321 goals with 622 assists for a total of 943 points.
