Former Winnipeg Ice forward Zach Benson scores unbelievable first NHL goal for the Sabres

Last Friday night folks in Winnipeg got to witness firsthand in the NHL what they spent the last few years watching in the WHL. Zach Benson, who was selected 13th overall by the Buffalo Sabres at the 2023 Draft, played his first game in Manitoba since the Ice and Thunderbirds did battle in the WHL Championship series last May. He picked up an assist in the loss to the Jets.

Last night in Washington the BC product finally scored his first in the NHL and it wasn’t an ordinary goal. It was spectacular and had the hockey world buzzing.

He spoke after the OT loss about the game, his first NHL goal and more.

He’s now got one goal and four assists in nine games for Buffalo.

The question for him now is whether the Sabres will keep him and burn a year of his ELC or if they’ll send him back to juniors.
