For the first time ever the Winnipeg Jets are Presidents’ Trophy winners

Regardless of what happened in the Jets and Oilers game the NHL club of Winnipeg will win the 2024-25 Presidents’ Trophy as the top team in the entire NHL as they knew before their game concluded that the Capitals had lost to the Blue Jackets.

Washington trailed Winnipeg by five points with three games remaining so they couldn’t afford to drop any points. With the loss they cannot catch the Jets which means the team from Manitoba will be the top seed in the entire playoffs.

It’s the first time since 2012 that a Canadian team has won it.

And for those worried about the Presidents Trophy curse in the 37 years since the NHL started handing it out the team in first has won the Stanley Cup eight times (although not since 2013) which is more than any other of the 2-16 spots. Next most was fourth which has won six times.

A really big accomplishment for a team not a lot of folks had faith in to start the season.
