The Detroit Red Wings have locked up another piece of their Stanley Cup Championship team.

The club signed restricted free agent forward Valtteri Filppula to a five-year, $15 million contract on Wednesday.

This is why the Red Wings are the Red Wings.  They avoided an arbitration hearing with a youthful member of the core of their hockey team and got him locked up to a five-year deal that has an annual cap hit of $3 million.  Tremendous work by a tremendous organization.
