On the 32 Thoughts Podcast which was released today Elliotte Friedman was speculating as to whether or not this was the end of the current Jets core. He did add an interesting comments about the Jets, Pierre-Luc Dubois and the Montreal Canadians:
“I think the Jets have talked to the Canadians on and off about Dubois. We know Dubois is going to end up there 95%. Is there some way we make the deal so the Canadiens get him earlier and we get something we want. I think they’ve talked about that but they haven’t been able to make the deal.”

From a strategic standpoint if you’re Montreal GM Kent Hughes and you have that level of certainty that you’re gonna get Dubois why would you give up one single prospect or draft pick? While every market wants to win now, if you’re the Habs do you really want to give up anything of substance if you are gonna get the player “for free” in a year?
This does have a very similar vibe to the Jacob Trouba only wanting to go to the New York Rangers type of situation.
It will be interesting to see how Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff, who has shown a lifetime of patience when painted into a corner, handles this situation. There are still plenty of options for him when it comes to how this plays out.
