Depth delivers for the Winnipeg Jets as they top New York Islanders 5–2

The Jets are going streaking as they pick up their second straight win and first on the road defeating the Islanders 4-2 to kick off the first roadie of the season. The depth was evident throughout the game as they got contributions from their bottom six forwards.

Notable:

Goalie Eric Comrie got his first start of the season and was excellent to start this game (even if his team was a bit slow out of the gate).

We keep talking about Morgan Barron deserving more opportunity and the way he’s playing early in this season he’s not gonna give the staff a choice as he opened the scoring with a beauty backhand. With the primary assist Cole Koepke picked up his first point as a Jet.

Jets needed Nino Niederrieter to get going and he did giving the visitors a two goal lead on the power play. And Jonathan Toews has his first NHL point since April 13th, 2023 and Gustav Nyquist also had his first as a Jet with the primary assist.

The Jets lost Cole Koepke after the 1st period. He blocked a shot on the penalty kill and didn’t return for the 2nd. Winnipeg tweeted that he would not return for the 3rd due to a lower-body injury.

Just 14 seconds after the Islanders scored in the middle frame, Big Stan aka Logan Stanley jumped into the rush and beat Ilya Sorokin for his first of the year. Also sneaky smart play by Nikita Chibrikov to disrupt Islanders Matthew Schaefer in the neutral zone.

The visitors were a bit sloppy in the 2nd taking a few too many penalties but they managed to do some damage after killing a too many men, Nino Niederreiter came out of the box and he must have eyes in the back of his head cause he put the puck right on Tanner Pearson‘s stick to set up his first of the season.

It was a scrambly 3rd period but not a ton happening as Mark Scheifele sealed it late with an empty netter.

Eric Comrie made 32 saves on 34 shots. Good first game of the year for him.

Winnipeg improves to 2-1-0 on the season with the victory.

Multi Point Game:
