Daniel Torgersson cleared unconditional waivers (his Winnipeg Jets contract is terminated); signs with JYP Jyväskylä in Liiga

We learned on Saturday that the Jets placed Daniel Torgersson on unconditional waivers for purposes of contract termination. With the 2020 2nd rounder not seeing much action with the Moose having played in just 12 of their 25 games and with his path to the NHL looking unlikely it was clear he was better off seeing another opportunity.

We learned via Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet today that he had cleared which meant his contract with the Jets was terminated.

We haven’t yet heard which team he will be signing with but presumably it would be somewhere in Europe.

In his best season he had 11G 9A for 20 points in 69 games but that was two seasons ago. He has trended down since. He played a total of 137 games in antlers scoring 14 goals with 18 assists. He also played seven playoff games for Manitoba.

Update:

The Finnish club JYP Jyväskylä announced they have signed Torgersson to a deal for the rest of this season as well as the 2025-26 one. From the team website:

“I like to play at a high pace and use my size to my advantage in the attacking zone. I’m good at protecting the puck and taking it to the goal,” Torgersson says.

“I’m looking forward to playing. The league is a good place for me to take the next step in my career and develop as a player,” Torgersson continues.

Torgersson, who shoots from the left, is a strong and big forward. Standing 190 cm tall and weighing 100 kilos, he likes to play hard and gives his all in every situation.

“Daniel is a good-sized forward who knows how to use his size to his advantage on the field. He works hard and puts his body on the line for his team,” says JYP’s sports director Simo Mälkiä .
