In the latest episode of 32 Thoughts Kyle Bukauskas asked Elliotte Friedman for the latest on Nikolaj Ehlers which starts at the 39:06 mark. Friedman indicates he’s hearing that Ehlers is in the same boat as the Leafs Mitch Marner, which is that he’s going to July 1st to test free agency. He added that nobody will confirm that Ehlers has given Winnipeg an “absolute no” but that the feeling “out there” is he’s going to July 1st.
Nothing new there.
Bukauskas then speculated about the Hurricanes potential interest in Ehlers to which Friedman mentioned a previous deal that didn’t come to fruition:
“When the whole Necas stuff has been going on, there was a lot of talk about Necas for Ehlers but the Jets didn’t believe that they were going to get a commitment from Necas long term so they ultimately didn’t make that deal.”

Worth noting Friedman doesn’t indicate when this discussion took place. This is nothing new as there was smoke surrounding a swap of these two players last summer.
