On the latest edition of the 32 Thoughts Podcast Jeff Marek and Elliotte Friedman were chatting about the departure of Guy Boucher’s from the Leafs and Friedman added this about former assistant coach Dean Chynoweth (pronounced SHIN-owth).
“There is news, I believe, about another of Toronto’s assistant coaches from last year who’s also out. That is Dean Chynoweth. The word is that he can end up as an assistant coach on Scott Arniel’s staff in Winnipeg. I think there were a couple of teams who were looking at him.”
The Calgary product was a 1987 1st rounder who was drafted by the Islanders (13th overall) and would go on to play 241 NHL games with New York as well as with Boston.
After he concluded his time as a player he joined the staff in Utah of the IHL as an assistant coach in 1998-99 where he spent two seasons. He then went to the WHL for nine years as a head coach split between Seattle (4) and Swift Current (5).
He returned to the NHL with his old Islanders team as an assistant in 2009-10 for three seasons, went to the AHL as a head coach with Lake Erie/San Antonio for four years before jumping back to the NHL with Carolina (3) and Toronto (3).
He ran the PK for the Hurricanes (8th, 4th, 3rd) and Leafs (8th, 12th, 23rd). Read more about his Power Kill PK philosophy.
