MLive.com: Red Wings cancel annual prospects tournament in Traverse City. It was cancelled due to uncertainty surrounding the CBA. Kevin Allen of USA Today thought that this was the sign of the apocalypse (apocalypse meaning lockout).

The Canadian Press: CRTC approves sale of MLSE television channels to BCE and Rogers. If the two rival companies can work together so well on the Olympics, this should be easy as pie.

The Hockey News: Many restricted free agents still without contracts. Jets fans know that Evander Kane has yet to sign. However, Jamie Benn, PK Subban, Michael Del Zotto and Ryan O’Reilly are just some of the other restricted free agents who have yet to sign. Did I mention there was 29 days until a lockout?

Sportsnet.ca: Domi added to Maple Leafs Alumni Roster. They can cancel the whole season, but please don’t cancel the alumni game.

The Sporting News: Five Hole: Union unites, Canadiens rebuild, 2014 Olympics. My vote is to send the players to Russia.

The Telegram:  No plans for IceCaps to play games in Winnipeg if NHL lockout occurs.  There was speculation that the Caps might plays games in the Peg’ but this puts that to rest.  But if no Jets and no IceCaps, this might be a pretty empty arena.

CBA news:

New York Times:  A clause that could salvage the Winter Classic.  Not very surprising that Bettman & Company would plan for any and all consequences that would impact that 2012-13 season.

USA Today: Discipline another issue in labor talks.  The players will likely outline how they would like to see the process work more fairly this week.

CFL Report:

Illegal Procedure: Winnipeg Blue Bombers Papers. If you are a fan of CFL football, check out our other site, which gives you all the latest Bombers news.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Teammates take it easy on cleared-for-contact Wellwood.  A veteran player like Wellwood doesn’t need to prove himself in training camp so there is no need to risk injury.

The Telegram:  No atmosphere of entitlement with Jets.  Proper player development seems to be the mantra that the Jets 2.0 are following, and we see that as a good thing.

Winnipeg Sun:  Where will Jets end up?  This was one of the most hotly talked about topics once it was confirmed that Winnipeg was indeed getting an NHL team.  Realignment will continue to be a hot-button issue this season as teams who would like to get to the East (Detroit) are faced with reality that Quebec could get an NHL team which would further confuse this issue (depending on which division it comes from).

Winnipeg Free Press:  Debunking the myth of Jet-lagging.  Interesting that with all the concern over travel, the Jets are only 10th in the NHL in travel miles this season.  Another advantage is that they have a pretty young team that can likely handle the rigors of a lot of travel.

Globe and Mail:  Start the season already.  Once again Roy hits it on the head.  Every June when the Cup Finals are ongoing, you can’t help but wonder how they are still playing hockey when summer is in full swing.  Of course if the Jets were the team in the Finals, I don’t think Winnipeg fans would care when they are playing the games.

Winnipeg Sun:  Jets’ Wellwood eager for action.   Cleared for contact following his appendectomy surgery, sounds like he is eager to get going again.

Winnipeg Sun:  Split road trip hectic for Jets.  He was asked in the media scrum if he’s been asked to pick up a brush to help with the painting of the MTS Centre.  You can pretty much insert anything before hectic for Jets and it is going to apply this season.

Winnipeg Sun:  Jets have stopping power.  As Claude Noel said in the media scrum, he isn’t worried about his goalies.

The Barrie Examiner:  Things looking up for Colts.  While people in Winnipeg won’t be happy to see #1 pick Mark Scheifele head back to the Barrie Colts, everyone in Barrie will be overjoyed to get him back for another season.

The Winnipeg Jets today announced they have released the following eight players from training camp. Players will report to the following teams where indicated.  Austen Brassard – Bellville Bulls(OHL), Mike Kirkpatrick – St. John’s IceCaps (AHL), Levko Koper, Adam Lowry – Swift Current Broncos (WHL), Kendal McFaull – Moose Jaw Warriors (WHL), Sebastian Owuya – Medicine Hat Tigers (WHL), Ivan Telegin – Barrie Colts (OHL) and Zach Yuen – Tri-City Americans (WHL)

Winnipeg Free Press:  Noel making plans for cutdown.   Not surprising that the Jets are going to reduce their roster to a more manageable number.

Winnipeg Free Press:  He’s an overnight sensation but a voice of reason.  It’s a good thing that Hawerchuk is voicing his opinion as I’m not sure anyone else could curb the enthusiasm of the Jets fans and not get a harsh reaction.  (well Ducky and IC’s own Richard Pollock who will have a post on Scheifele at 10 am today).

Winnipeg Free Press:  Postma skating on bubble.  As Ryan covered in yesterday’s On the Farm column, there just isn’t going to be room for this young Jets prospect barring injury.

Winnipeg Sun:  Jets revved up.  The fans will be buzzing for the entire season.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Jets love Mellchiroi’s upside.  These young prospects should be happy that they aren’t being rushed to the NHL.  A lot of them need the seasoning of another season in jr before they are ready to make an impact.  Long term development for the franchise will see the benefit.

Portage Online:  Local Jets player flying high after first win.  Portage la Prairie’s Troy Bodie talks about playing in his first Jets game.

CBC:  Winnipeg Jets are a true Hollywood story.  This is a story not yet finished.  While many Jets fans feel the happy ending (Jets return) has occurred, the true end is a parade which ends at Portage and Main and Winnipeg celebrating its first Stanley Cup victory.  (of course it might take a few years for that to happen, but we can wait).

Winnipeg Sun:  Scheifele’s a keeper.  I think that it is premature to start making emotional decisions and IC’s Richard Pollock will have a post at 10 am today further to that point.

Globe and Mail:  Keep fourth line on the bench.  If you haven’t bookmarked Roy MacGregor’s column in the Globe and Mail, you are missing out.

Winnipeg Sun:  Jets debut to include party at Forks.  It is the meeting place in the city and an appropriate spot for Jets fans who will miss out on watching the game at the MTS Centre.

IceCaps News:

CBC:  St. John’s IceCaps jerseys revealed.  I like the jerseys.  Clearly very similar to what the Jets are wearing.  What are your thoughts on them?

Winnipeg Sun:  Scheifele turns heads in Jets’ NHL debut.  The kid was causing a buzz in the stands and in the press box, but he wasn’t exactly facing top notch NHL talent just yet.  We don’t want to be seen as raining on the parade because we think this kid is going to be a star in the future for the Jets, but there isn’t much point to putting too much on his shoulders too soon.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Scheifele making magic.  The home crowd would have been pleased with him skating around the ice, but the fact that he scored twice and added 2 assists had them cheering him all night long.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Split-squad affair a tale of two cities.  Read this so years from now if you want to know the answer to the inevitable Jets 1st exhibition trivia question, you will.

Winnipeg Sun:  Blue Jackets turn tables on Jets in Ohio.  Not to be forgotten in all the revelry is the fact that the Jets did technically go 1 and 1 on Tuesday, as the other squad failed to beat the Jackets in Columbus.

Winnipeg Sun:  Biggest Jets home exhibition debut since 1986.  It was a night of firsts in what is expected to be a season of many firsts.

Winnipeg Sun:  Big night for Bogosian brothers.  IC’s Ezra Ginsburg had post game interview with the Blue Jackets Aaron Bogosian and it turns out their dad came to watch his sons play in tonight’s game, as it was the first time they faced each other at the NHL level.

Winnipeg Sun:  One big Jets love-in.  As Andrew Ladd said in the post game scrum, is anyone worried about Buff’s weight now?

Globe and Mail:  Winnipeg Jets achieve liftoff.  It was a night like no other in Winnipeg for as far back as I can remember.  As Roy said, it was a meaningless game that held so much meaning.

Discover Moose Jaw:  Warriors McFaull still with Jets.  With cuts starting today, you can bet a lot of the younger players will be heading back to their Junior teams.

Winnipeg Sun:  Jets soar to first win.  The legend of the Jets 1st round pick is already being sung and I’m sure that none are happier (aside from his family) than his coach and legendary Winnipeg Jet Dale Hawerchuk.

CBC:  Jets hockey returns to Winnipeg after 15-year separation.  The separation anxiety is finally over and you could almost sense that fans didn’t truly believe that they were finally cheering for ‘their own’ NHL team.

Winnipeg Sun:  Thrilled Jets fans pack arena.  And they chanted ‘Go Jets Go’ from before the game started, and continued to chant that until well after the game ended.

Detroit Free Press:  NHL wants realignment figured out by December.  Oh ya, I guess it is time to move Winnipeg into the West, but good luck figuring out which of the 3 teams speculated to be moving (Nashville, Columbus and Detroit), are actually going to head on East.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Jets have already won over fans, now they have to win games.  The impression I have from this group of players is that they have a legit shot at the post season and if they do that this season, they will have made 700,000 people in Winnipeg even happier.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Times sure change over 15 years.  It seems almost incomprehensible to those of us who remember the NHL in 1996 to the NHL of today.  Social media alone makes it a vastly different environment for fans and the players.

Winnipeg Sun:  Jets’ Stuart a crowd pleaser.  After meeting Mark Stuart for the first time at the Jets jersey reveal at 17 Wing, I could tell that he has what it takes to be a real crowd pleaser.  Super nice/genuine guy who the fans are going to really like.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Tinker with chemicals before finalizing formula.  This group seems to have a lot of chemistry already, but discovering that scoring formula will be the next science experiment that they should focus on.

Winnipeg Sun:  Jets players put positive spin on hitting the road.  As Blake Wheeler said yesterday to the media, it seems like these guys just want to make sure they are in the linup for the October 9th home opener.

Kamloops Daily News:  Madaisky to be on ice for historic game.  The Blue Jackets rookie will be in for the experience of a lifetime when he takes to the MTS Centre ice tonight.

Winnipeg Sun:  Got grit?  Jets think so.  Seems a lot of the players are not wanting to be stuck with the label of fighter or enforcer, but won’t shy away from the rough and tumble.  During Evander Kane’s interview yesterday, he seemed to think this team will be able to handle itself.

Winnipeg Sun:  Plenty of room for fighting in NHL.  Further to this article and as Remis reported yesterday, the Jets Glass sees a place for it in the game still.

Winnipeg Sun:  It’s gonna get loud.  Perhaps they will crack out the old decibel meter to see if the Jets fans can hit new heights.

Globe and Mail:  Jets face early chemistry test.  This was the buzz word around the media room yesterday.  (This article was in yesterday’s afternoon news but b/c it was a late addition, I felt that it was worth sharing with those who missed it yesterday).

Winnipeg Free Press:  Scheifele expects to earn his keep.  This kid is saying and more importantly doing all the rights things so far, both at the Young Stars Tournament and now at the Jets 1st training camp, but all indications seem to have him returning to junior to continue his development.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Big-time team means bigger parking costs.  It wasn’t just the price of tickets that saw an increase.

Winnipeg Sun:  Noel mum on split-squad lineups vs. Jackets.  Apparently we can expect the stronger team here in Winnipeg, which is good news as I’m sure everyone wants to see this franchise start with a victory at the MTS Centre.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Players get bit of a breather on Day 2.  Without the crowds it reverted to a standard NHL training camp day.

Winnipeg Sun:  Jet thanking his lucky stars.  Funny to read about a pro hockey player meeting his idol.

Winnipeg Sun:  Jets hopeful Jaffray keeps overcoming.  Will he get one of the final forward spots?

Winnipeg Sun:  Goalie Aebischer getting noticed by Jets.  Seems to be quite the fast decline from Stanley Cup to tryout.

Globe and Mail:  Winnipeg Jets’ first practice ‘awesome’.  The entire atmosphere this summer (but specifically this weekend) has been without parallel in Winnipeg’s history.  Every step of the way until the October 9th home opener against the Habs (and really every step of the way this season) will be a new, exciting foray back into the NHL realm.

Winnipeg Sun:  Pressure’s on for young Jets.  When Bryan Little was at the podium he seemed confident that the Jets would be able to have enough scoring punch this season.

Winnipeg Sun:  Jets honour Rypien.  Nice move by the franchise to honour the memory of Rick Rypien.

Winnipeg Sun:  Jets goalie not faint of heart.  He says he is 100% again and that is good news for the Jets since they are going to need him to be a work horse this season.

Winnipeg Sun:  Jets Kane mentors Scheifele.  I still don’t see the Jets keeping him around post training camp.  Why put that sort of pressure on him?  Give him another season (or two) to season up and then he will be a player worth watching.  We’ve seen what happens when you rush kids into the NHL too quickly.

After the jump Cormier haunted by hit, Meech aims to stick in Winnipeg, win a trip/Jets tickets in Sun contest and even NHL.com is melding the history of the Jets 1.0 with the Jets 2.o.  In ‘Around the NHL’ news Sabres hire a former Jets star as a coach, reading between lines at Oilers camp, Kipper not gonna hit 70 games for the Flames and the Red Wings have some competition for positions this camp.

Winnipeg Sun:  Cormier haunted by hit.  You don’t want to excuse vicious behaviour but you hope that those were the actions of a young, immature kid and that he learnt his lesson and is ready to move forward.

Winnipeg Sun:  Jets Meech aims to go from stands to ice.  Whenever I went to a game at the Joe, it was always funny to bump into a fellow Pegger (usually wearing some form of Jets memorabilia) but Meech will find it a lot more ‘homey’ now.  Perhaps the hometown edge might move him up depth chart.

Winnipeg Sun:  Win trip, Jets tickets in Sun contest.  I suspect that this contest will have a number of people purchasing the Sun for their chance to win Jets tickets.

NHL.com:  Opening of camp intensifies hockey fever in Winnipeg.  Even NHL.com has trouble distinguishing between the old Jets 1.0 and these new Jets 2.0.  He says “The first Jets NHL game in Winnipeg since April 28, 1996…” and you can bet that this blending of history’s will continue when 1000′s of fans wear the original Jets jerseys to the exhibition games next week.
 

Around the NHL:

Buffalo News:  Sabres hire Numminen as third assistant coach.  With Buffalo coming to town (January 19th & March 5th), Jets fans will get a chance to cheer #27 for old times sake.

Edmonton Journal:  Reading between the lines at Oilers camp.  Are the Oilers rushing the young defenceman to fill that hole in the top 4 too quickly?

Calgary Sun:  Kipper would welcome lighter load.  6 straight seasons of 70+ games seems just insane but it appears the Flames will be breaking that streak this season.

The Detroit News:  Intense competition kicks off season for Red Wings.   Seems a surprise that the Red machine has any openings.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Jet engines start winding up.  The MTS IcePlex will be rocking for the first training camp in over 15 years and the Jets players are ready for lift off.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Luck of draw means tickets for fans.   Get your name in for a chance to win the opportunity to purchase tickets.  IC’s Remis was down at the MTS Centre all day and offered his thoughts on the Jets new system.

Winnipeg Sun:  Into the unknown with Jets.  Which is why all the prognosticators in the world can’t tell you exactly how a season will play out.  While many expect these Jets to finish anywhere from 8th-13th, we won’t know until that last game of the regular season against the Bolts how this team has done.

Winnipeg Sun:  Jets return ‘exhilarating, exhausting.  In our tour of the MTS Centre yesterday, you could see that work was still being done to get the place into NHL shape.  The men and women who work on the MTS Centre for True North deserve a lot of credit for getting things done as quickly as they have.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Fans’ last chance to watch practice.  I believe that Saturday the 24th is also an open practice, so while you will have 2 chances to see the Jets, today’s practice will have a magic as it will be the first in this team’s existence and you can expect the IcePlex to be jam packed with fans.

Winnipeg Sun:  Jets’ Buff clams up.  Can’t really expect him to open up too much to the media right off the bat anyways, and especially when the subject is about pending legal issues.

Winnipeg Sun:  Noel gaining a handle on Jets.  We often forget that he has a job to do and while fans expectations might not be too high just yet, he still has bosses which he needs to impress.

Globe and Mail:  Jets players can kiss anonymity goodbye.  The players are going to be living in a fishbowl, there is no denying that.  But it comes down to what sort of player you want to be.  You can be an anonymous face in the crowd elsewhere, or you can be someone who is noticed and picked out simply for the job you do.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Fergie’s Way.  Randy Turner wrote a book entitled ‘How Winnipeg won, lost and regained its place in the NHL’, which will be available in local bookstores Sept. 26

Around the NHL:

OC Register:  Perry grows up.  As I tried to explain to people who selected the Ducks game against the Jets on the 17th of December, even had Teemu retired (very happy he didn’t) Anaheim still is a great team to watch, including a chance to see the NHL’s reigning MVP.

Chicago Sun-Times:  Goalie Corey Crawford enters camp as Hawks’ starter for first time.  Didn’t realize that Crawford is just 26 years of age.  Chicago is hoping he can keep them stable next season.

Buffalo News:  Roy eager to get back to work for Sabres.  The longest tenured coach with one of the most solid goalies in the league, the question for these Sabres is will the new parts improve them to Cup contenders this season?  A healthy Derek Roy is a good start.

Globe and Mail:  Can Canucks handle Cup hangover?  If Vancouver is looking for inspiration, they need look no further than the Pittsburgh Penguins, a team that shook off a Stanley Cup defeat to Detroit, to win the Cup against those same Wings the following season.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Life is so much better at the top.  When these guys were playing for the Moose, they always had a lot of positive things to say about the city, but the end goal was always getting out.  I’m sure Peggers’ are happy that Winnipeg is now a place guys will be fighting to stay in or get to from St. John’s.

Winnipeg Free Press:  All work, no play at MTS Centre.  I am serious when I say these guys might not be able to relax until the end of the 2011/12 season.

Winnipeg Sun:  Veteran likes Jets’ youth movement.  The Jets have a nice mix of young and old, and if allowed to gel together could create some difficulties in the East this season, and more likely the Western Conference for years to come.

After the jump Wellwood is a man of many roles for the Jets and the strong power play but weak penatly kill of Winnipeg.  In ‘Around the NHL‘ news the Leafs sign Luke Schenn, Kings still at odds with Doughty and is there a better guy than Teemu Selanne?

Winnipeg Sun:  Many of many roles for Jets.  Watching Wellwood in practice yesterday, he looked pretty good.  Yes it was informal, but he made some pretty nice passes.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Strong power play, weak penalty kill.  As Richard discussed a few weeks back, if the Jets can cut down on their shots allowed, the overall impact it could have is rather significant.

Around the NHL:

Toronto Star:  Leafs lock up Luke Schenn.  They signed him to a 5 year, 18 million dollar contract.  Now that Schenn and Bogosian have signed, you would imagine that Doughty is right around the corner.

Los Angeles Times:  Kings still at odds with Drew Doughty over new contract.  Can’t figure out why the Doughty camp hasn’t signed the deal.  The Kings could be a force in the Western Conference but they need complete team to make the move up the standings.

Edmonton Journal:  Is there a better guy than Teemu Selanne?  Very simple answer, no!  Simply the best (cue that song) As I said yesterday, he will blow the roof off the MTS Centre on December 17th, and that’s before he even steps on the ice.

Winnipeg Sun:  Facing Canucks will have special meaning for McCambridge.  While many Jets 1.0 fans still hold hate in their heart for the Canucks (92 + 93 playoffs losses plus Peca’s hit on Selanne), the NHL/AHL connection these two cities had has created a sort of sibling rivalry, that could really blossom into a great future NHL rivalry when the Jets rejoin the Western Conference.

Winnipeg Sun:  Gregoire making decisions difficult for Jets.  The local Winnipeg product has been playing well, but by his own admission, he is one of the oldest guys at the Young Stars Tournament.  It will be more telling when he goes up against the NHL guys at training camp this weekend.

After the jump the Jets take flight, Winnipeg hockey culture created by fans not PR firms, DePape wants to show all-around game, Jets spend big bucks on blueline.   In ‘Around the NHL’ news, former Nordiques owner still talking about how QC could have had an NHL franchise before Winnipeg.

Winnipeg Sun:  DePape wants to show all-around game.  Well we know he can fight.  He looked decent in the Tournament but won’t see action in the finale vs. the Canucks.

Winnipeg Sun:  Big bucks on Jets blueline.  Are we the Devils of the North?  With the lack of a marquee forward this team has solidified it’s back end, and the way it’s built, the Jets can be strong in that area for years to come.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Jets take flight.  If we thought the Jets rookie open practices were busy, I can’t wait to see the crowds that come out to the two open training camp practices.

Uptown:  Hockey culture is created by fans, not PR firms.  He’s right.  The Jets are 100% ingrained into the very fabric of this community.

NBC Sports:  Former Nordiques owner says NHL is returning to Quebec City soon.  Marcel Aubut would be wise to focus on his city, and stop mentioning that if his city has an NHL ready arena, they would have had a team before Winnipeg.  Hypothetical’s are great but as of the 2011/12 season, the Jets are back.  Now Peggers’ will be overjoyed to see hockey return to Quebec City, but he may want to focus on building an arena, and not on which city deserved an NHL franchise.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Buff only slightly tarnished.  Sounds like he should be alright.

Toronto Sun:  Addition of Winnipeg good for hockey.  It appears that what we’ve known in Manitoba for a long time, is finally being understood elsewhere.

Winnipeg Sun:  TSN Jets channel yet to land on MTS, Shaw.  Based on the numerous emails and texts we receive on a daily basis, I have to imagine that Bell, Shaw and MTS realize that they need to get something done to avoid a revolt here in Manitoba.  While we await word from either MTS or Shaw, IC’s Michael Remis put together this handy TSN Jets FAQ.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Glass sees right through the pressure.  While Peggers’ might be hesitant to accept anyone from Regina (after back to back losses to the Roughriders), Glass’ leadership will be welcome on this young team.

Winnipeg Sun:  Jets seeing stars.  If you thought you were having a mid 80′s flash back watching the Oilers beat the Jets, you weren’t.  The most notable player was Oilers rookie goalie Tyler Bunz, who was the difference maker.

The Province:  Chinese NHL hockey prospect a sign of things to come.  This kids a role model not just for his athletic ability, but because he has displayed high levels of achievement in other pursuits as well.

Winnipeg Sun:  Jet has safety net.  Not many guys take this route, but if hockey doesn’t work out, he will always have something to fall back on.

Winnipeg Free Press:  O’Dell better than ever after heart-hole scare.  Lucky for him it was discovered and fixed and if he was previously only at 80%, perhaps he will really blossom now that he’s been restored.

Winnipeg Sun:  Jets Swedish tough guy?   The Jets will have more use for him on the ice than in the penalty box.

TSN:  Question surround availability of Byfuglien and Bogosian.  Those would be some difficult holes to fill on the blue line.

Toronto Sun:  Bogosian sees himself in different light.  Hopefully once the contract has been signed, he will thrive under these admittedly tougher conditions.

Portage Online:  Bodie signs tryout contract.  The Manitoba product gives him hometown papers an interview about playing for the Jets.

National Post:  We know what you did last summer.  Just a rehash of what the Jets have been doing this summer.

Winnipeg Sun:  Byfuglien passed breathalyzer.  Which is why it’s important that you wait until all the evidence comes out before you start castigating someone.

Montreal Gazette:  Atlanta needed a winning team.  Can’t really argue with him.  They made the playoffs once in eleven seasons and had atrocious ownership.  Only so much fans will put up with before they rebel.

Globe and Mail:  ‘Winnipeg Destiny’ comes full circle.  Really great read.  Perhaps we are now experiencing the “All roads lead to Winnipeg” that was predicted almost 100 years ago.

The Province:  Jets GM Cheveldayoff happy to have Welly.  A move that didn’t break the bank and added some veteran depth.

Around the NHL:

Globe and Mail:  Brain tests add to hockey controversy.  If I was a parent I would have to think that I would want whatever done to ensure that my kid was safe.

Montreal Gazette:  Habs’ question marks will soon be answered.  Fans in Winnipeg only care about one thing, and that is the Habs leaving town with a loss against the Jets.

Winnipeg Sun:  Jets Young Stars win opener 4-0.  The Jets are now on a winning streak.   Can’t remember the last time that happened.  Nice way to kick start the franchise.

Winnipeg Sun:  Scheifele shows dazzling potential.  It was enough to get Jets fans jumping off the couch as they saw the potential of the Jets #1 draft pick last night.

Winnipeg Free Press:  For Zach, it’s all about the money.  End of the day, he wants what he feels he is entitled to and the team see’s that number differently.  For Jets fans, it’s about the two sides meeting in the middle, at a number they can both be comfortable with.

Winnipeg Sun:  Jets’ Bogosian unsigned but optimistic.  Can this deal get done before Saturday?

Winnipeg Free Press:  Yuen showcases an awesome skill set.  He and Mark Scheifele were the last two skaters to leave Day 2 of the Jets rookie practice and they put on a dazzling display of trick plays.

Winnipeg Sun:  Jets prospect Pasquale’s thrown to the wolves.  He looked good during the rookie practice and again last night.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Old Jets voice shut out of play-by-play jobs.  While many were hoping that this blast from the Jets past would be the new voice of the Jets 2.0, the choice was made to go in a different direction.

Victoria Times-Colonist:  Oddsmakers not pumping Jets’ tires.  While the rookies might have gotten Winnipeg off to a 1-0 start in the Tournament, the oddsmakers aren’t giving the Jets much of a shot in the regular season.

Winnipeg Sun:  Your chance to be a Jet. Our Michael Remis will have more on the release of NHL 12.  Throngs of Peggers showed up last night to meet Evander Kane.

Around the NHL:

National Post:  A look at five troubled NHL franchises.  Amazing considering 3 of the 5 on the list have won Stanley Cups.

National Post:  Leafs prospect Olden already feeling at home.  Not surprising to see that some want to develop at home in Europe, but seems this Leafs prospect is happy with his switch to North America.

Edmonton Journal:  Katz reportedly living in Vancouver. Probably the only bigger sin would be a move south to Calgary.

Calgary Herald:  Flame hopeful doesn’t mind garbage goals.  All that matters is that they go in, not how many times you make the Sportscenter Top 10.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Jets just as excited as their joyous fans.  I spoke with Chris Mason the other night and you could tell that the Jets players were feeding off the excitement from the Winnipeg fans across this great city.

Winnipeg Sun:  For young Jets prospect father does know best.  While the NHL of today is a lot different than when his father played, it still helps to have someone who is able to give you guidance.

Winnipeg Sun:  Ex-Wheaties captain honoured to be at Jets’ first camp.  There were a lot of wide eyed players at yesterday’s practice.

Winnipeg Sun:  Jets prospects under scrutiny.  Fans can tune into Sprorts Radio 1290 which will be doing play by play of the games.

Winnipeg Free Press:  No. 1 pick Scheifele shows off his skills.  The fact that he was noticeable will have Jets fans breathing a sigh of relief for the Jets off the board first overall pick.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Jets rookies work up a sweat at MTS Centre.  Talk about providing players with an environment in which you have to be able to swim when thrown in the deep end.

Winnipeg Sun:  Gregoire eyeing Jets roster spot.  As Richard said on the IC radio show yesterday, he is going to be one of the oldest guys playing and should be able to use that to his advantage.

NHL.com:  Ten years later, 9/11 still resonates in hockey.  I cannot believe that it has been 10 years since 9/11.  The Kings plan to honour 2 of it’s own, Director of Pro Scouting Garnet “Ace” Bailey and scout Mark Bavis who were aboard United Flight 175.

Miami Herald:  Stillman retires, stays in Panthers organization.  Surprised the Hurricanes didn’t try and recruit him in this capacity.

The Province:  Five Canucks prospects to watch.  Still can’t believe the Canucks signed an affiliation deal with the Chicago Wolves.

St. Petersburg Times:  Coach Guy Boucher seeks intensity when Bolts open camp.  When you get as close as these guys did to making the Stanley Cup Finals, you can’t afford to take your foot off the gas.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Lingering hangover.  This is not the type of start the Jets wanted their big man to begin the season with.

Winnipeg Sun:  Rookies ready for centre stage.  IC will be down to interview and photograph some of the young guns this weekend as they prepare to make their impressions on the Jets staff.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Prime Minister falls in love with Jets jersey.  Would have to expect that our PM is a big fan of the military themed uni’s.  There is something inherently Canadian to see the leader of our country watching a hockey game in amongst his fellow citizens and it will be nice to see Prime Minister Harper in Winnipeg on the 9th.

Toronto Star:  Jets stuck on real estate runway in Winnipeg.  Like almost everything that’s been done since the franchise changed hands, it’s been a mad dash to the finish line to try and get everything accomplished that needs to get done, like finding homes for players before the season gets underway.

Winnipeg Sun:  Wellwood could be great investment.  As has been stated previously, neither side is taking a big gamble and could be decent pay off.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Gregoire has point to prove in B.C.  Kyle, our prospects expert, is quite high on this local Winnipeg product and thinks he can be a nice addition to the team.

SI.com:  Which is the best uniform?  The guys over at SI are conducting a poll to determine the best hockey uniform and these are your four options for the Jets.

Around the NHL:

OC Register:  Selanne might delay decision until camp.  No Teemu. some of us have already selected the December 17th game against Anaheim and we’d like to know now if you are planning on playing.

News & Observer:  Canes mull visit to Atlanta.  Perhaps it is “too soon” to be picking over the carcass that is the fan base in Atlanta but it appears that there are 2, if not 3 NHL teams that are prepared to duke it out for this fan base.

Calgary Sun:  Flames prospects aimin’ for big gig.  Now is the time for optimism but will it last?

Winnipeg Free Press:  Jets sign Wellwood to one-year deal.  The deal is worth $700,000.00 to Wellwood, and doesn’t represent a big expense for Winnipeg if they can get some productivity out of the 28 year old.

Winnipeg Sun:  Bruins Cup win tough on Wheeler.  It is one of those tough to swallow character building moments for the young Jet.

Global Winnipeg:  Hockey stars still looking for homes in Winnipeg.  The market is tough and competitive, even for guys making 6 0r 7 figure salaries.

Buffalo News:  Sabres prospects ready to flaunt skills.   I’m looking forward to seeing these upstart Sabres when they come to town.

Calgary Sun:  Same ol’, same ol’ for Flames.  If there is one guy I wouldn’t want to underestimate it’s Jarome Iginla.

Denver Post:  Avs goalie Varlamov heads to Russia for services in wake of crash.  Since he used to play for Lokomotiv, he must have a lot of connections to the team.

Boston Herald:  Bruins back at it.  What people tend to forget, is that unlike other teams, whose season ended weeks if not months earlier, the Bruins have a very short period of time in which to enjoy the Cup win, before they have to get back to the grind.

 Along with great on-ice success, the Eagles have sold out every game they have ever played on home ice. They hold the minor pro-hockey record for consecutive sell-outs at 311 games, including playoffs.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Local cable providers hope to score TSN Jets.  Have to wonder if Bell is making MTS and Shaw squirm a bit.  Also perhaps they are delaying in hopes that more subscribers to the 2 main providers of cable in this province will jump ship.

Winnipeg Sun:  Fehr fully expects to miss Jets home opener.  It explains his reluctance in taking off his Jets jersey at the jersey reveal on Tuesday.  Hopefully he is ready to go for the Jets as soon as possible.

Winnipeg Sun:  Jets counting on Antropov to regain scoring touch.  As I said before I still remember Cherry doing a special on the young, up and coming Leafs prospect and how he was going to do unbelievable things for Toronto.  With him healthy this season, a nice rebound would be exactly what the doctor ordered.

The Telegram:  IceCaps hopeful knew coach, players in Russian plane.  He was forced to take to twitter to dismiss rumours that he was on the plane as was incorrectly reported yesterday.

Globe and Mail:  Saying goodbye to Brad McCrimmon.   The former member of the Brandon Wheat Kings will be missed by many.

ESPN:  KHL President vows Lokomotiv will rebuild.  Seems a bit premature to be worrying about this.

Around the NHL:

Sault Star:  Turco still have the fire.  I think you have to give him a call if you’re looking for a veteran goalie.  He deserves it simply for making the bet with the fan in a game.

Calgary Herald:  Head hits remain despite loss of marquee player.  Too many guys have been lost to not take this seriously.

Greatest Hockey Legends:  Czechoslovakian Air Disaster of 1948.  Joe Pellletier’s site is a must read for those who want to learn more about hockey history.  In this report he details the tragic loss of members of the Czechoslovakian team.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Jets continue to impress.  Count me as someone who was impressed by yesterday’s ceremony.  What needs to be remembered is that the Jets are doing everything at hyper speed.

Winnipeg Sun:  Jets looking good in new jerseys.  While some might not feel that you are going to get a players honest thoughts about the jerseys, having had the opportunity to conduct 1 on 1 interviews with Eric Fehr, Mark Stuart and Nik Antropov yesterday, the trio generally seemed pumped about the new uniforms.

After the jump we get Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff’s thoughts on the rush job, fans reactions to the Jets jerseys and some prospect news.  There is Breaking news out of the KHL that a plane carrying the Lokomotiv hockey team crashed, killing 36 a short while ago.  In ‘Around the NHL’ news Sid Crosby is doing a press conference today, Teemu’s knee is still determining factor and NHL’s return to Quebec took a step forward.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Team’s GM pleased with rush job.  People might not love everything about the new jerseys, but they need to remember that this was done in a fraction of the time normally allotted for new jersey production.

Winnipeg Sun:  Fans finally see Jets jerseys.  From the fans we’ve talked to, the overall impression is a positive one.

TSN:  Plane carrying KHL team crashes, killing 36.  This evokes memory of the plane crash that happened to the Marshall college football team. Former Winnipeg Jet Igor Korolev is an assistant coach with Lokomotiv.  Thoughts and prayers to the families.

Around the NHL:

ESPN:  Teemu working on his knee.  I’m not a betting man, but if I had to guess, I think that he is going to play next season.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:  Crosby to speak publicly today about his health.  They will be live tweeting his press conference in case you want to know what is happening with the game’s #1 superstar.

Montreal Gazette:  Quebecor’s NHL arena pact okayed.  If you are a fan of NHL hockey returning to QC (and who can say they don’t love those blue jerseys) then this is a step forward to getting a team back.

Be sure to pay attention to @illegalcurve all day as we (ICdave and mremis) will be live at 17 Wing for the jersey reveal and will be tweeting and interviewing Jets players to get their feedback on the new uniforms.  Here are the 2 counterfeit examples that were seized by the RCMP.  It should be interesting to see how close they are to the real thing.

Mlive:  Red Wings forward Patrick Eaves, Drew Miller happy to keep grinding.  This is why the Red Wings are always so successful, because they can convince guys to adopt roles and play them perfectly.

CBC:  Flyers’ Holmgren stable after bike crash.  Having seen a few bike crashes in my day, I can attest to the fact that these injuries can be quite horrific.  Sounds like the Flyers’ GM is gonna be ok.

After the jump the Predators revamp glass/boards, King Henrik is excited for the regular season to start and a special treat, a video of 5 year old editor of Illegal Curve Richard Pollock listing off a mid 80′s Jets team from memory (Let’s Go….”).

The Tennessean:  Predators revamp glass, boards. Safer for players and better for fans sounds perfect to me.

North Jersey:  Henrik Lundqvist excited about regular season start.  As someone who picked the October 24th Jets game against the Rangers, I too am excited to see King Henrik come to Winnipeg.

Sportsnet:  Cup chasers.  Brophy gives his assessment on the 7 Cdn clubs.  This point he made about the Jets is all fans can hope for:

the Jets are a team otherwise moving in the right direction and if goaltender Ondrej Pavelec plays to his potential, he’ll give his team a chance to win on most nights.

Sportsnet:  Some unfinished business.  A quick blurb about RFA Zach Bogosian.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Up close and personal with Derek Meech.  I enjoyed watching him play for the Wings the last couple of seasons, and he should be a good addition to the Jets.

IceCaps News:

St. John’s IceCaps:  Who should be the captain of the IceCaps?  Don’t forget that the Jets team will develop via its farm team, so the moves that are made over on the East coast are very relevant to fans here in Winnipeg.

Around the NHL:

Montreal Gazette:  The NHL must ban fighting.  What do readers think?  Is it time to do away with fighting or is this purely reactionary?

Charlotte Observer:  Canes look silly for the sake of science.  Right now it is just being used for training purposes but I couldn’t see how that would be comfortable during game play.

After the jump we have a Q & A with the Stars Toby Peterson, the Oilers are a wee bit optimistic if they think they can overtake their southern provincial rivals and as fans mark Belak’s death his friends honour his charitable legacy.

ESPN:  Q & A with the Stars’ Toby Peterson.  Looks like the Stars will be using the team mentality, rolling 4 lines all season.

Edmonton Journal:  It’s too optimistic to expect the Oilers to overtake the Flames this year.  Staples article shows that just because an expert makes a prediction, it isn’t absolute.  As well it would seem highly unlikely that the young gun Oilers are ready to take over for the aging but veteran Flames just yet.

Globe and Mail:  As fans mark Belak’s death, friends honour his charitable legacy.  A very worthwhile cause, one that will hopefully get some much needed recognition as a result.

Sun: What are your first impressions of Winnipeg weather?

Klingberg: Great. Better than Sweden. A lot better. It’s hot, now. I have no idea how it’s going to be in the winter. But it’s great so far.

TSN:  Winnipeg Jets Regional Broadcast.  Here is a link to the TSN Jets specific page that was put up a few days ago.  We were asked whether the channel would be picked up by SHAW or MTS and when I spoke with a SHAW rep. she indicated that as long as you had TSN 2 you would be covered for all the TSN Jets games.  However on this link it says that currently the only provider is Bell and also indicates the following(bolding by me):

As part of the agreement, TSN will broadcast more than 60 regional regular season and pre-season games each season to fans in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Nunavut, the Northwest Territories and parts of Northwestern Ontario on the new specialty channel “TSN Jets” – a part-time television service dedicated to Jets games and launching September 20.

Additionally in the initial TSN release about the news they essentially said the opposite of what I was told by the SHAW rep.

TSN is in discussions with television service providers in the broadcast region with the hope of ensuring the broadest possible distribution of Jets games.

So while we expect both MTS and SHAW will have these games when it comes time to start watching the Jets in the near future, it would appear as of this moment, neither of these two have the Jets new specialty channel.

Holland Sentinel:  Q & A with Joey Kocur.  Just a quick mention of the fight that Kocur had with Jets tough guy Jim Kyte. Here is the video of that brawl which left Kyte with a very sore head.

In Other News:

Assiniboia Downs:  Sept 3, Race 4 last night (Marathon Series).  As I mentioned yesterday, we had our horse Wagels running at the Downs last night.  It was a long race (mile and a 1/2) on a muddy track but it proved to be no problem for him as he led wire to wire.  Click on the link and watch the replay.  Well worth it if you enjoy horse racing.
 

After the jump we have Tim Thomas getting the Stanley Cup for a 2nd day, Eric Belanger (the guy everyone in Wpg loves) aims for a job with the Oilers, and a major issue for the NHL’s next CBA.

ESPN:  Thomas brings Cup to his other hometown.  Nice that he got a 2nd day with the Cup to head on down to Vermont.

Edmonton Journal:  Journeyman Belanger aims for a job with the Oilers.  Luckily for him the Oilers only face the Jets once this season at home (February 27th), so he is likely hopeful that Peggers’ will forget his comments when he was a member of the Coyotes last season.  Of course, we don’t forget anything, no matter how innocuous his comments were.

National Post:  Salary-cap floor a major issue for NHL’s next CBA.  Unfortunately the CBA always terminates on this kid’s birthday, so sometimes, when their is labour strife, it is a bittersweet day.

Winnipeg Sun:  Jets Buff still commands respect.  I’m with IC’s #1 favorite Jet Chris Mason.  It’s too early to start tarring and feathering Big Buff, especially since he hasn’t been officially charged with anything.  Although it might be awhile before fans forget his mug shot.

Portage Daily Graphic:  Jets’ Little anticipates rural support.  You would think the following statement was made by a fan, but instead it comes from the Jets Bryan Little:

“I was down at the dressing room the other day, checking it out and I don’t think I’ve been this excited for a season of hockey ever. I can’t wait for it to start.”

TSN:  Jets prospect Klingberg targets Jets job, memorabilia.  The more I hear from this prospect, the more I like what he has to say.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Good news – some Jets packing on muscle not fat.  This is very good news for those concerned with the Jets #1 overall pick in the 2011 Entry Draft.  Hopefully he can pair this muscle gain with further skill development and the Jets may be on the way to developing this diamond in the rough.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Up close and personal with Nik Antropov.  Seems like just yesterday Don Cherry was featuring him as a Toronto rookie to be aware of, and now he’s a 31 year old vet playing on the Jets.

Prince Albert Daily Herald:  Former Raider play-by-play and Raider alumni team up for Jets.  Quite the dynamic duo that fans can enjoy for years to come.

Winnipeg Free Press:  This Winnipeg flood most welcome.  As you could see with Remis’ video yesterday, this is slowly but surely become more and more real.

Monteal Gazette:  Quebec City, Quebecor in final talks over arena.  Technically they are just putting their ducks in a row and with the state of some NHL teams, they probably aren’t putting the cart before the horse with this move.

Edmonton Journal:  Ennis sizes up Nugent-Hopkins.  I like the fact that smaller stature is no longer a red flag for player selection in the NHL.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Rough road ahead for ‘Big Buff’.  We are putting the cart before the horse.  Once he is formally charged, then it will be time to deal with possible scenarios.

Winnipeg Sun:  Welcome to the fish bowl Buff.  And to think it all started with a tweet.  Of course that snowballs and then next thing you know, it is splashed across the internet.  While Manitoba is hockey mad, anything Jets related is going to get a lot of press in this first year.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Season tickets to their ‘Jets cave’.  A lot of people who set aside money for Jets tickets were shut out.  Some have joined the 8000 strong waiting list while others signed up for Bombers season tickets.  This family in particular used the money to improve the entertainment ‘zone’ in their house so they could enjoy Jets games in style and it sounds like many other are doing something similar.

Winnipeg Free Press:  More details released on Jets Byfuglien arrest.  Big Buff isn’t looking too happy in his mug shot.  We will have to wait and see if the Lake Minnetonka Conservation DA plans to proceed with charges or not.

Winnipeg Sun:  ‘Energy guy’ Klingberg ready to show Jets he means business.  Our player prospect expert Kyle is high on this kid and with this type of attitude I can see why:

“My goal is to take the jersey and play in the NHL from the start,” he said. “I’m going to fight like hell in the camp to get a spot.”

Edmonton Journal:  In defence of Glen Sather against his accuser, the failed phenom Jason Bonsignore.   Sometimes the style that nurtures a Gretzky or a Messier will have the opposite effect on another player and that is what appears to have happened here.

TBO:  Stamkos not feeling the pressure.  He uses the word honest too much, which leads me to believe he might be a little bit deceptive.  Let’s face it, when you sign a monster contract, you are bound to feel some pressure.

Winnipeg Sun:  ’Rocket scientist’ not needed to see Jets appeal.  While I agree that this seems to be a no brainer for TSN, it further solidifies True North’s financial position and will be a major revenue stream for the team.  

Winnipeg Free Press:  2011-12 Jets Broadcast Schedule.  Who is ready to watch some hockey???  When you actually look at all those games, the reality of the Jets return manifests itself.

Winnipeg Sun:  Hnidy moves to radio booth.  From the Stanley Cup Finals to his home province’s team, it’s been quite the year for this Manitoba son.

The Barrie Advance:  Colts back in Stable.  Mostly discussing the state of the Barrie Colts but Coach Hawerchuk mentions Jets 1st round draft choice Mark Scheifele.

“Mark’s such a great player but he’s also a good kid and my understanding is the Jets had a great interview with him,” said Hawerchuk. “I think originally everybody thought that Mark would be coming back here, but this kid could very well make the Jets. If he doesn’t we will certainly welcome him back. He’s an infectious kid, always has a smile on his face and can’t wait to play hockey.”

Regina Leader-Post:  Glass gives back.  Sounds like the True North mantra of character guys strikes again.  Nice to see Glass giving back to the community that gave him his start and which sounds like it still means a lot to him.

Around the NHL:

Delaware Online:  Flyers reconstructed roster poised to win.  Probably one of the biggest overhauls the league has seen in years from a Cup contender.  Will be very interesting to watch the Flyers this season and see if this has its desired result.

ESPN:  Stars hope depth will help with grind of long season.  Looks like teams want to now start following the Bruins model to achieve success.

OC Register:  Selanne optimistic about playing this season.  The only people happier than fans of the Ducks is the entire city of Winnipeg.  Looks like that Ducks game on the 17th of December is going to go up in desirability after the Finnish Flash said this:

“So far, so good. I’ve been skating three weeks now, and I’m really optimistic,” Selanne said by cell phone on his way to the charity event, in his first interview since returning to Orange County with his family. “I’d like to play one more year, but I want to be sure I can play and enjoy the game the way I always do.”

NHL.com:  Re-draft all 30 NHL teams.  Guys over at NHL.com a few days back had some time to kill so they re-drafted the entire league.  What do you think of the “new look” Jets?  Love the idea of having Datsyuk on our team.

NESN:  Bruins ready to face nightly challenge.  When you’re a David and you’ve beaten Goliath, everyone is pulling for you.  However, inevitably fickle fans will turn on the upstart, once he’s proven to be the new big dog, and those same fans become detractors, pulling for you to lose.

After the jump more on the Oilers Gagner’s recovery from his freak accident, the young Canes are proving themselves and concussions continue to dominate the talk at a Quebec hockey summit.

Edmonton Journal:  Gagner recovers from freak accident.  If the Oilers don’t want the 1st overall pick again this season, they are going to need players like Gagner to be playing and to stay healthy with Edmonton fans hoping he cracks the 20 goal plateau for the first time in his career.

News and Observer:  Young Canes proving mettle.  While everyone assumes that the life of a player is all partying, a lot of these young guys have to spend the entire summer training just to get themselves remotely ready to compete for a position on an NHL roster.

Globe and Mail:  Concussions dominate talks at Quebec hockey summit.  It really seems that the league is trying to get this epidemic under control, but they are still trying to figure out the best means for achieving same.

Winnipeg NHL Site:  Ask a Jet.  A new feature that allows fans the opportunity to pose their questions to Winnipeg Jets players, coaches, staff and management.  The first up for fans is Andew Ladd, so get your questions in by August 29th.

Winnipeg Sun:  Ladd excited to be back in town – albeit briefly.  The Jets made a very good move in securing him for the long term.

The Barrie Examiner:  Colts camp all ready for kick-start.  Barrie looks like a Jr. Jets team, with a couple of their prospects playing under the watchful eye of former Jets 1.0 great Dale Hawerchuk.

Winnipeg Free Press:  We’re begging you Mr. Bettman, no Nickleback.  Ouch a lot of hate being thrown at the Cdn act.  Having said that, I’ve never been a fan of them either.  Why don’t we have the local Weakerthans perform………oh wait.

True Hockey:  Wellwood hopes to return to San Jose, Winnipeg interested?  He can continue to “hold out” (if this rumour is accurate) on the Jets while he waits for a call that is apparently not coming from the Sharks, but he would be better off coming to the Peg’ and working hard this season.

St. Louis Today:  Langenbrunner finds new home, new role with Blues.  Hard working player that the Blues are hoping will use his veteran leadership to help develop their younger players.

Edmonton Journal:  Magnus Paajarvi jumped the pond in a single bound in 2010-11.  Should be exciting for Oilers fans to watch this young gun as he continues to develop this season.

Patriot-Ledger:  Fenway Park to host Hockey East double header.  While the outdoor game is becoming a bit more commonplace than it was when the Cold War between Michigan State University and the University of Michigan back in 2001 began the practice of outdoor games, to play at Fenway is a very cool venue.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Roy playing a new position.  Interesting that Roy never played 1 shift in the NHL.  I like that the Jets showed loyalty to him.  I’m sure we can expect him to bring the same work ethic that he showed when in the AHL to his new job.

Boonstra Farms:  Winnipeg Jets corn maze.  Pretty cool homage to the old Jets 1.0 at this corn maze.

After the jump meet another Jet, Canes’ Stewart still seems upset about not being retained by the Jets and Winnipeg gets some twitter love from Carl Klingberg.  From ‘Around the NHL’ a number of papers tackle the issue of concussions as well as the Sharks sign Couture to an extension.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Team rounds out scouting, clubhouse staff.  Similar to the Jets approach to free agency, they didn’t make any big moves, but perhaps the slow, steady build will be a successful model for both the on-ice and off-ice talent.

Star-Phoenix:  Blades get high-tech headgear.  Any advances that can alert doctors to possible injury is a step in the right direction.

Winnipeg Sun:  Jets’ Little now a big fish.  I remember when I saw David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail in the airport around the time of the Jets announcement, I walked up to him and told him that unlike in other markets, even the reporters will get noticed in Winnipeg.  The players are going to be treated like Kings when they begin to arrive.

Winnipeg Sun:  Jets top pick pumped.  Let’s hope his on ice play is as smart as he sounds off ice.  So far this selection looks good for the Jets.

Boston Herald:  Bruins Nathan Horton ready to go.  Something needs to be done immediately by the NHL to figure out a way to minimize the number of players being concussed.  You can’t afford to lose your stars.

Globe and Mail:  CBC shoots down anti-Western claims.  You would think if there aren’t that many Flames, Oilers & Canuck Saturday night contests, they would factor the Jets into the 2nd part of the broadcast, not the 1st.   Of course if you look at the schedule the Jets start times on Saturday’s are all early so the above couldn’t really work.

Cornell Daily Sun:  The return of the Winnipeg Jets.  While the article is more of an informative piece for someone who hasn’t been following the Jets return, it is significant in that Winnipeg is again being discussed in forums where we hadn’t been mentioned previously.  I absolutely agree with this statement:

In the U.S., including at Cornell, most people believe Winnipeg is either some obscure farming town or a made-up city. So, by regaining an NHL team, Winnipeg will hopefully become a recognizable city once again.

NESN.com: Douglas Flynn previews the Winnipeg Jets for the upcoming 2011’12 NHL season.  A nice quick read courtesy of Boston Bruins beat writer Douglas Flynn. It’s nice to read a variety of previews from across the hockey globe. Although many hockey writers don’t think the Jets are a playoff team this year, the consensus is that the Jets are an up-and-coming contender.

USA Today:  2011’12 rookie crop could top last season’s group.  Last season was pretty good with Jeff Skinner, Logan Couture, Brad Marchand and Cam Fowler. You have to think Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, the #1 overall pick in June’s draft, is the early favourite.

NHL.com: Kings sign Ethan Moreau to a one-year deal. This is a nice depth signing for the Kings. Moreau will provide the Kings with some depth on the third line and will be a role model for the team’s younger players.

Winnipeg Sun:  Kane able to think big.  Finally something that actually has to do with hockey, and it isn’t logo controversy.  Let’s hope Winnipeg gets to see Kane realize his potential.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Kane to don Hull’s #9.  Technically he isn’t doing anything wrong, since Winnipeg doesn’t own the Jets 1.0 history anyways, however he received the Golden Jet’s permission just to cover his bases.  Even True North said it was fine:

The Manitoban:  Quite ‘yer complaining.  At this point it is moot anyways, since the logo isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, so it’s time to accept it and start supporting your Winnipeg Jets.

Dallas Morning News:  Stars sale target now Labor day.  Quite a number of teams in the NHL for sale right now.

Montreal Gazette:  Buying peace with mighty Quebecor, with our money.  Looks like Montreal and other parts of Quebec aren’t enthused about the idea of paying for NHL hockey to return to Quebec City.

Phoenix Business Journal:  Coyotes sale progress coming next week.  Will wait to next week before we start buying that there is a serious group involved.

The Telegram:  IceCaps’ ticket sales have not run dry.  And with the removal of two “dry” sections, they will likely see an increase in both season ticket sales as well as booze purchases.  Of course Danny Williams and company have already established the league’s largest season ticket base, so anything additional at this point is gravy.

CBS Sports:  A look at Zach Bogosian’s power play usage.  Jets fans are going to have to hope to see a big increase in those numbers next season.

Rick Rypien News:

Winnipeg Free Press:  A tough man and a good teammate.  Here are all the quotes from across the NHL.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Jets never saw it coming.  True North and Rypien had quite the relationship so his passing came as quite a shock to many within the organization.

Vancouver Sun:  Fans grieve over loss of Rypien.  Always nice to see the fans show support for the family after a tragedy.

SportingNews:  Rick Rypien’s death gives depression in hockey a face.  It is a shame that something like this has to be a catalyst to get people talking.

USA Today:  ‘Everything seemed positive before Rick Rypien’s death.  That is the problem, you might not realize something is wrong, until it is too late.

New York Times:  Rypien’s death follows bouts of depression.   Reading the quote from his mother, you realize that this is a very private matter being dealt with across the most public of forums, and you hope that people treat the issue with respect.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Fighting for their livelihood.  Is it time to eliminate fighting in the NHL?  What do you think?

CBS Sports:  Predators hockey entrenched strongly in Nashville.  I’ve always been a fan of the franchise in Nashville.  I like the ‘us against the world’ attitude they seem to have.  Of course Winnipeg native Barry Trotz recognizes what can happen when you lose a team.

“I think when [Winnipeg] lost its team, it lost its swagger… I was [recently] in Winnipeg for my mom and dad’s 50th. Winnipeg’s got its swagger again. Pro sports in communities, especially in smaller communities, they get a little swagger from it.”

Washington Examiner:  Not typical minor league towns.  Hershey is the king of the AHL and they probably could put their fan base up against some NHL ones (and win).

Toronto Star:  Top juniors to test NHL’s proposed new rules.  Wow.  This will be quite interesting to watch, when theory becomes practice.

Ottawa Citizen:  Alfredsson feels ‘good to be back on ice’.  When did Daniel Alfredsson hit 38?  Time flies.  Hope the Sens captain can stay healthy all season.

CBC:  Jets expected to address Rypien’s death.  IC’s Michael Remis will be attending the news conference and we will have the audio up from Jets assistant GM Craig Heisinger following same.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Up close and personal with Andrew Ladd.  Good to know his favorite food is sushi.  Lucky for him, Winnipeg has some incredible sushi, with the best being Wasabi on Taylor.  NHL.com has captain Andrew Ladd on their list of Eastern Conference players on the hot seat.

Winnipeg Free Press:  Ultimate teammate hid his dark emotions.  Perhaps this will help to shed a light on the issues of mental illness.

Winnipeg Free Press:  True North mourns loss of fan favourite.  Hockey really becomes secondary when overshadowed by this type of tragedy.

North County Now:  Bogosian on the ice in Canton for clinic.  At least they described him as a Winnipeg Jet.  Nice to see him supporting his local community.

The Telegram:  List of contenders for jobs with IceCaps grows.  True North has already done an excellent job to ensure that it’s farm team is well stocked.

Around the NHL:

New York Post:  Nassau ices new Islanders bid for Coliseum.  Looks like it’s back to the drawing board for County executives if they want to keep the Isles in their county.

Globe and Mail:  Vancouver Canucks need to quell venting underbelly of fans.  The Canucks fans should be happy that they are currently the favourite to win the Stanley Cup.

Toronto Sun:  Don’t jump the gun on Crosby predictions.  No need to rush the #1 player in the NHL back too quickly.  It isn’t worth losing him long term.

Montreal Gazette:  Clouston aims for NHL return.  While Clouston’s reputation is that of a rigid head coach, this article does a nice job of giving fans a peak into his more human side.

Chicago Sun-Times:  One on one with Dan Carcillo.   The Hawks sure got something in this guy.
