We just wanted to remind everybody that tonight is the IllegalCurve.com Radio Show from 7pm-9pm Central time.

Tonight’s guests are John Glennon of the Tennessean and Rutgers University Law Profesor Mark Edelman.

Glennon will be on to discuss the Predators’ off-season, the chances of a number of Predators participating in the Olympics, and what to expect next year in Music City. To send a question along for Glennon, drop a question/comment in our mailbag and we’ll do our best to get to it.

Edelman will be along to breakdown the American Needle v. NFL case that we spoke about on last week’s show (the 60 minute mark). He is the expert on this particular case and will be discussing the ramifications of this potential ruling on the NHL and hockey fans around the world. Small Thoughts at Large wonders aloud if politics come into play when slotting kids into roles at the Ivan Hlinka tournament. Perhaps, but to me its more likely to be a case of the coach being familiar with players from his league.
The underdog Team USA: Olympic Edition, is being built to defeat Canada. They should maybe take a gander at Russia’s roster. I would be worried about Red Dawn II if I were them.
The Greatest Hockey Story ever told? Hilarious.
The Top 10 Songs for stalking a hockey player. While IC doesn’t condone the stalking, at least the music is worthwhile.
This one is from yesterday, but its worth the post. Puck Daddy discusses the risks of going to a game, and comments on a lawsuit arising over a piece of plexiglass. Thankfully a jury saw right through this one.

An antitrust case currently before the US Supreme Court could have a huge impact on the NHL, as well as the other major sports. The outcome will indeed be interesting. Hopefully the court gets the “wise Latina woman” perspective on the issue.
It looks like Harvard is very excited to be getting Louis Leblanc. Leblanc should do very well at Harvard, but I don’t expect him to stay there long.
If you are in the LA area, be sure to check out the Kings display at LA Live at the end of August. Kings broadcaster Bob Miller will be there performing a one man show on the history of the Kings. Sounds like a fun time.
Justin Goldman, writing over at Dobber Hockey, has an excellent article for fantasy hockey GM’s discussing the merits of skill versus the merits of opportunity. Interesting points to consider for every fantasy GM.
Puck Update has a little bit (and a couple links) about Fred Shero, and a brief item about Dale Tallon.
A few more brother acts from Greatest Hockey Legends, including the Plagers, the Howe’s and the Cooks. The Plagers sound like fun guys to have on a team.
I must have missed this one earlier, but please check out Western College Hockey Blog’s 2010 draft list. Several excellent players on the list. Fowler is a wonderful skater and McFarland can really make things happen on the ice.

Relocation hearing moved up

At a hearing Wednesday, judge Redfield Baum called the relocation issue “the 10,000-pound elephant in the room” and said it needed to be resolved quickly.

He set a hearing for June 9 and promised a ruling shortly thereafter. All briefs and declarations must be submitted by June 5. The relocation hearing had been scheduled for June 22, but Balsillie has said he will withdraw his US$212.5-million offer if the sale is not completed by the end of June.

As the article states, the NHL is going to appeal if it loses and that will serve two purposes. Number one is obvious, in that it gives them a chance to win the case. Number two, is the fact that an appeal process would continue to push back a resolution date, thereby making it harder for Balsillie to set the wheels in motion if he were to win the case.

Fanhouse has a profile on Jordan Schroeder of the Minnesota Golden Gophers, who is a likely 1st round NHL Draft pick. Schroeder is quite small, but his skill is undeniable.
Team Canada is told that it cannot use the now familiar Hockey Canada logo. Kind of a shame, but a simple maple leaf will look good too.
The Winkler Flyers have reacquired Dayne Belfour, son of former NHL’er Ed Belfour.
The World of Junior Hockey has commitment news, an update on the World Junior A Challenge and the junior leagues weekly award winners. Chiasson is a very skilled player and will fit in well at Boston University.

The NY Times writes that Barry Melrose is finding his groove as Lightning coach. Better late than never.

NHL Owners in Legal Trouble

Anaheim Ducks owner Henry Samueli had his plea bargain proposal rejected today, Reuters reports.

SANTA ANA, California (Reuters) – A California judge on Monday rejected a proposed plea agreement sentence of probation and a fine for Broadcom Corp co-founder Henry Samueli as too lenient, and postponed the sentencing until later this month.

Samueli, 53, pleaded guilty in June to a charge of making a materially false statement to U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission investigators, following the company’s restatement last year of $2 billion in compensation expenses.

Stories of NHL owners in legal trouble has become almost a weekly occurrence.

In a tentative ruling from the bench, U.S. District Judge Cormac Carney said the crime was serious and “could warrant a significant prison sentence.”

Carney said he would issue a final order later Monday, but postponed the sentencing and set a September 29 hearing.
