True North clearly didn’t want to go with the Jets originally, but they’ve been careful to gauge public opinion and act accordingly. I’m in agreement with the Freep that it’s risky to go with anything else.

I haven’t heard a single convincing argument as to why we need to go with a different name anyways, other then this franchise history stuff. The brand is too powerful and has too much loyalty. Expansion teams would jump instantly at the possibility of wielding the sort of international prestige and loyalty that the ‘Winnipeg Jets’ brand does.

Everything has been so carefully orchestrated by True North you have to believe they HAD already chosen to go in a different direction.

I think what has given them pause is the community reaction and I believe they will go with Jets, and at this point it is merely waiting to decide between Manitoba and Winnipeg.

Count me as someone who simply wants to chant, Go Jets Go.

So far to date True North has hit a home run with every move they have made. Not only a home run, but an upper decker out of the park bouncing down the street home run.
Having said that, I have faith that Chipman and company will do the right thing in the decision that they make regarding our new name.
I believe that there is no franchise in the NHL (or any other major North American sport) that will have such a relationship with the community like the Winnipeg _____ will have.
It is almost a partnership between True North and the fans.
The fact remains that without the fans 100% support, this franchise can sink quite quickly in the deep waters of the NHL.
Yes, we sold out in 2 minutes( P3 Holder here ) but that is only for 5 years. Beyond that, if the name is announced as the Manitoba Polar Bears, I will not be renewing and may be hitting Kijiji sooner than later.

While I put myself solidly in the pro-Jets camp, the article stating that the club’s name “is easily the biggest issue” facing the organization is flat-out idiocy. I’d think little issues like finding a coach, the upcoming draft, the Ladd contract and sorting out the defensemen might be more important.

Belongs to the city, no doubt. Most people in Phoenix could care less about the Jets history, probably even more now after the fiasco that was fighting with people in Winnipeg for most of the last year. I know fans that would gladly remove the banners themselves, and return them. I dont anticipate the people of Winnipeg keeping their own history alive, along with Jets alumni, so ignore where the banners hang, and cheer loudly when the JETS turn the Coyotes into roadkill.

One of the arguments I have heard recently that I agree with is that the people of Phoenix have no emotional ties to the Jets, they couldn’t care less about Teemu Selanne, Dale Hawerchuk, Bobby Hull, Thomas Steen, Kris King etc etc. Those players played here, broke records here, now that we have a team back the records should stay here.

It’s an interesting situation in the NBA with the OKC Thunder as well. The owners of the Sonics signed a joint history agreement where if a team comes back to Seattle, they will be the Supersonics and share the same history with the OKC Thunder. However, OKC fans really couldn’t care less about the Supersonics history, their retired numbers and championship, so who does the history really belong to?

We don’t need the Jets history back from Phoenix. We don’t need anything from Phoenix. We’ve got a team. I’m happier with the Thrashers. Still would love to see the Jets name brought back – Manitoba Jets perhaps rather than the Winnipeg Jets. Phoenix only has ties to the Winnipeg Jets history.

I know everyone wants it to be the Jets, but i just dont think TN is going to go that route. For many of the various reasons being bounced around social media. Believe me, i’m with everyone else, and nothing would be more satisfying to yell go Jets go at a Blue Jackets game next season, and i know people will anyway, but im just not betting on Jets.

That Lawless article about why you guys are better off with the Thrashers. I dont need to rehash my feelings again, but Winnipeg does need players who are excited, not whiny. Now you have the pleasure of watching an NHL team live in your city, and always watching one continue to fail in the desert. Delightful!

Has to be the Jets as far as I’m concerned. The franchise history issue is problematic though. The NHL owns the Phoenix Coyotes, but unlike clubs like Colorado and Carolina the Coyotes actually decided to honour the Jets history as their own. The NHL wants that franchise to succeed and nothing would better signal its demise like ponying up the pre-1996 franchise history and forking it over to Winnipeg.

I’m convinced though that the Phoenix Coyotes aren’t around come opening day 2012, either through relocation or simply folding. Name the team the Jets in the meantime without the history and then go retrieve it at a later date from the corpse of the Coyotes organization.

Also, I think the history should remain with the city where it originated. That isn’t how it is, but it is how it should be. The Winnipeg NHL team has the Atlanta Thrashers franchise history, but as far as I’m concerned that’s something that’s better left in Atlanta with its fans. I’m not interested in Ilya Kovalchuk or Dany Heatley, they aren’t apart of our city’s hockey tradition.

If you retain the name Jets (with league blessings), then it shouldn’t be too difficult to have the Coyotes transfer the old record books/jerseys to our new team.

It was nice that they paid homage to their past, but do they really need a Dale Hawerchuk, Coyotes jersey with Winnipeg colors hanging from the rafters? Nope. We might have a bigger problem getting Teppo’s jersey since he actually played for them.

If we return to the name Jets (and I’m praying they do) then I think it should be done to fullest extent possible, and this means including all the past history of the team that played in Winnipeg.

That’s exactly why I think it needs to be Falcons. This is a new team, without the ties to the past. Yes we have the Cleveland Browns as past precedent, but every NHL team which has relocated has kept the history of the previous franchise. Personally, I’d love to see #25 or #10 hanging from the MTS Centre but I just don’t see how it happens.
