Thanks for the comment.

Re: 1. I have not seen Morin play, but I was just trying to break the trade down into parts. So, assuming Dudley likes Aliu, which I believe he at least did at the time, he probably saw him as an important piece. Aliu's stock has obviously fallen but I felt, at the time, Dudley was probably comparing them as apples and apples (probably in Morin's favour), rather than apples and oranges. Your point is well taken, however.

Re: 2. They certainly did well in the Ladd deal. Maybe the second rounder turns into something, but I can't see any way Dudley wouldn't do that deal again in a heartbeat.

I'm not sure I'd give the Mason signing a "B"; granted, he's a good guy/positive locker room presence presence, and the money isn't awful, but you find guys in the Biron/Lalime mode who bring the same mix for less money. I'd say that signing is more a "C" or "C-"

To me, Dudley seems like the guy who does all of the hard work/ground work establishing the roots of championship teams, but is never around to see that success fully flourish into a championship. Hopefully that pattern continues in Winnipeg.

After reading this analysis now I'm torn as to whether it was a good move or not to clean house. Guess we will have to wait and see what Cheveldayoff (man that name is going to get some mileage) does with the team.

Really informative article. Thanks.

A couple thoughts from a Chicago perspective...

1) If you think the Byfuglien deal boiled down to him for a 1st & 2nd, you haven't watched Jeremy Morin play. He projects as a top-six forward in Chicago, and was the meat to that trade from the Blackhawks' perspective. That said, I agree w/ your grade on that trade.

2) I cannot disagree w/ a B+ on the Ladd acquisition more. Vishnevskiy spent most of the 2nd half of last season as a scratch in the AHL, and has now left the Chicago organization in favor of the KHL. Andrew Ladd was the captain of the Thrashers last year, and played at a legitimate all-star level. They got Ladd for NOTHING. Now it's up to Cheveldayoff to keep him...
