In the pre-season, there are a lot of teams that live in the twilight world of “IF COUNTRY”.
Atlanta is one of them.
If Kari Lehtonen…because he can bring it, there’s no doubt. But when (if ever?), and for how long?
If the PP …because Kovalchuk-Antropov-Kozlov-Bogosian (this kid is amazing, snap him up for your fantasy team)-Little/White …well, you get the picture.
If Kovalchuk either has a killer contract year OR gets that whopper extension and DOESN’T go pffft.
If the ownership situation…
All the right Ifs come to pass…maybe a playoff birth…maybe win a game…maybe more…
Like they say in a photo-finish: too close to call, for me anyway.

Very interesting analysis.Most teams have high expectations prior to the onset of the regular season,but if Atlanta is able to extract the maximum talent from their players,they can be a surprise success this year. That same theory ,of course,would apply to every other team in the league,so your prediction will depend on a plethora of factors that only time will tell…..Great column,David.
