NHL Playoff Morning Papers (Thursday Edition): Evgeni Malkin elevates his game, Denis Potvin fired by the Panthers and Teemu Selanne thinks Winnipeg deserves a team

2nd Round Playoff Matchups

Boston Bruins (1) versus Carolina Hurricanes (6)

Washington Capitals (2) versus Pittsburgh Penguins (4)

Western Conference

Detroit Red Wings (2) versus Anaheim Ducks (8)

Vancouver Canucks (3) versus Chicago Blackhawks (4)

Teams that have been eliminated from the playoffs:

  • While the season started off in a disappointing fashion, Claude Giroux made himself a force to close the season and has given Flyers fans much to look forward to next season.  Meanwhile in Philadelphia,  Simon Gagne became aggravated enough with his contacts during games that he underwent laser eye surgery.

Teams that did not make the playoffs:

The Coyotes situation:

This is what I said yesterday afternoon and throughout the IC Radio Show last night: “Much like the lockout proved to be Napoleon’s Waterloo for Bob Goodenow, I strongly suspect the Coyotes/Balsillie disaster will prove to be Bettman’s Waterloo….”

This is what Alan Maki said in today’s Globe and Mail: “This is it for Gary Bettman — his Waterloo against the man from Waterloo, Ont.”

I don’t for a second think Alan Maki has plagiarized from me, because this analogy is fairly obvious, but I do think it leads extra credence to my argument that this “Farce in Phoenix” will be the final battle Gary Bettman will fight as the commissioner of the NHL. Win or lose, Bettman is done.

Will be interested to hear The Show, as always.

Pierre LeBrun’s ESPN playoff blog yesterday quoted Jonathan Toews as being in favour of the NHL returning to Winnipeg, too, (surprise) in “Balsillie News Hits Home”. Maybe Gary would look favourably on a bid from Jonathan’s Dad.

I understand that several Earl’s staff who are purported to be dating Toews were not available for comment.

LeBrun had another good entry “Here’s why a second Toronto-based…” yesterday as well. (I find much of Scott Burnside’s work to be somewhat less than stellar, but LeBrun is good — future guest on The Show?)

Max Talbot a factor again. His play so far this playoffs makes him an “Unsung Hero” candidate to me.

Thank God Potvin is gone. I’ve never been able to understand how a man who was such an excellent player could spout such drivel about hockey. Sure he was an employee of the Panthers but even so…

Here’s your smile for the day:

“The owners like to do these things on a quiet basis and get things done properly.”

    – Jimmy Devellano commenting on Jim Balsillie’s bid for the Phoenix Coyotes on The Fan 590, Toronto

I guess Jimmy hasn’t been following the front page splashes on Boots and The Cowboys in Tampa and the “legal troubles” for the Duck owners.

Let’s consider a hypothetical: What if the Winnipeg Jets had moved to Hamilton/”Southern Ontario” and the last 13 years had been the same on-ice?

    Consider the “Hamilton Coyotes”:
-playing in a converted basketball arena with obstructed-view seats
-allowing all popular talent to leave (Roenick, Tkachuk, Khabibulin)
    -changing uniforms, colors, and logos
-relocating from downtown to a suburb
-missing playoffs almost 10 years running
-setting up a gambling ring behind the bench
    -mis-managing scouting and player personnel

If you put any city through this, they’re not going to care enough about your team to spend $150 at your arena.

Have at it but don’t make the mistake of blaming AZ for the Coyotes troubles; don’t think it would be different in Canada.

Thanks for The Show archive for last night.

No Wayne G return to Ontario. Looks like he took that trade from Edmonton personally.
