On the Beat: More moves in Tampa

What team beat writers are saying this afternoon:

  • Justin Williams took a step forward in his rehab today.  He is recovering beyond quickly.
  • Derick Brassard has been taking some on-ice lessons from former Sabres legend Danny Gare. Always nice to see youngsters trying to get better.
  • Guy Carbonneau says he can understand why Montreal fans booed Mark Streit.  I don’t think many people find any fault with Streit leaving.
  • Mike Sullivan has returned to the Lightning as an assitant coachThe weird moves continue in Tampa Bay.  We all know Sullivan is a capable coach but he was working directly with John Tortorella last season.  Also, it seems odd to make a coaching move a week after the Melrose firing, instead of right at that time.
  • Bob Roberts

Those classy Hab fans scored the rare double play last night:

    Booing Streit and O’Byrne.

Still, there could be a bright side: maybe they’ll run O’Byrne (a class guy who could’ve ducked the media) out of town and another team will benefit. Not as they haven’t hounded anyone out before in Montreal…

Classy Carbo too, as always. By saying that Streit left the Habs to “take the money” but not saying he isn’t worth it he also implies his own team is too cheap to keep a good player (no, he wouldn’t say Streit was a poor player and that they kept another defenceman instead — not O’Byrne, of course — would he? Not Carbo — he’s such a subtle and thoughtful guy!), and of course he charged to the defence of his player, too — didn’t he? Sure he did, but it just isn’t quoted.

Such a shame for a franchise celebrating a century of hockey…
