Breaking news: Brodeur out 3-4 months

Posted by Richard Pollock in New Jersey Devils on November 4, 2008 — 5 Comments

According to TSN:

Martin Brodeur‘s assault on the record book will be put on hold as the Devils’ goalkeeper will undergo elbow surgery and will be out of the lineup for up to four months.

“This Thursday morning, Martin Brodeur will undergo surgery to repair the distal bicep in the left elbow,” Devils president, CEO and general manager Lou Lamriello said in a statement.

“We will not have any further comment or update until after the surgery is complete.”

Wow.  Terrible news for the Devils, as Brodeur is the main key to their team success.  The legendary netminder has carried the team for over a decade and really has shown no signs of slowing down, unfortunately this elbow injury will be the first time the great netminder will miss serious time due to injury.  Without Brodeur, the Devils become just another team and may very well find themselves on the outside of the playoff race.  The importance of this injury can’t be understated in terms of the Devils’ hopes.

Weekes is a solid NHL goalie, and with the same team in front of him as Brodeur had (plus injury returns) the question is: will Lou look to make a deal?

The Oil has been showcasing Roloson (while going with the hot hand — a nice combo if you can get it and want to move a goalie!) — but would he fit for NJ/Lou? Who/what would go the other way?

The Wall would be too expensive, I guess, and maybe not Lou’s type of player.

There are a lot of solid #2′s around…Halak, Conklin (?)…

Or will he necessarily deal at all? As I said, Weekes is a solid goalie — look at last night against the Sabres.

    This will defintely be interesting.

    What about Neekolai?

Khabibulan? That’s who I meant by The Wall.

Sorry Bob I totally missed that one…

Hey, when you get to be perfect let me know — I’ll be your manager and we’ll be rich. Must admit you had me going there, though.

Either way, he doesn’t HAVE to get a goalie; and if he does you can be sure that, being LL, he won’t overpay. Given the cap room he has he couldn’t anyway. Roloson would be a good fit from that point of view.

He’s said the right things, but he always does. It’s rabbit and hat time for the Devils, I think…
